Which should I equip for a Captain/Chapter Master? This is assuming you can only take one of course, since I know that issue is somewhat in debate.

I'm leaning towards Shield Eternal right now, especially for a Chapter Master. 4w EW with a 3++ will make him very hard to kill, more so if you can put him with an apothecary and/or a bike.

Well you can always take other weapons from the normal equipment list to hit hard in combat, but there's only one way to get that EW.

Shield Eternal, obviously. I'm kinda starting to dislike this item really. We got all these nifty artefacts, but because you can have only one (except with the armour) and the shield is just clearly the best item, no one will ever use the other relics.

True for the most part. I suppose other relics may be tried in the occasional "hell I'll give it a shot" lists. But I agree, Shield Eternal is by far the best one. Chapter Masters become EXTREMELY powerful with it.

Shield Eternal. 3++, EW and Adamantium Will in one package with no risk...I agree that it clearly outperforms the other items. The only downside is the price tag.

Its only 20 points more than a regular storm shield. So EW and AW for 20 pts on a 4 wound model.... yes please.

I voted the Burning Blade (well really the Teeth of Terra) for my captain as I like the Shield on my MotF on a bike. Finally an invulnerable save

I really don't see why you can only take one. I have more than one weapon to swap out for relics.. Doesn't an Iron Hands Chapter Master with Burning Blade and Shield Eternal Sound like too much fun to pass up?

Shield Eternal for everyone besides Imperial Fist players. Now everyone can run a pretty much Lysander.

The relic rule says that you can swap one weapon for a relic, I don't see why you couldn't take 2 relics by swapping out both your character's weapons.

That said, I tried the Burning Blade yesterday and it's the tits!

I played against Necrons so it helped (easily failed his Init test for blind) and then I chopped his Lord's metal-nuts off.

Hitting at S7 AP2 at initiative is awesome, most insta-kill weapon in CC are initiative 1 so you have a pretty good chance of killing your enemy before that happens. The Shield Eternal is awesome too but I feel you can get around insta-kill wounds with good placement and LOS.

I haven't tried either yet, but the idea of 6 S7AP2 hits on the charge at I5 really appeals to me. 7 attacks if he's rolling with his honour guard.

Went up against a BB captain yesterday, he hit like a brick (before being gunned down by a HB rolling 3 6s when snap-firing), and while he was only killing tacs in that game, the thought of the fact he could do the same with to Honour Guard, termies or other elite stuff is just scary.

My favorite Relic in the book is the Teeth of Terra, actually. It can boost the amount of attacks by a lot if given to A chaplain or Captain (provided he is outnumbered) and he can take a lightning claw or power fist to add +1 to his attacks Along with the Rampage attacks.

Think this is best for chaplains, actually.

My current favourite (going on the assumption that relics are 1-for-1 with weapons) is a captain with Teeth of Terra, Armour Indomitus and Primarch's Wrath. He is surprisingly shooty, with the armour giving relentless for 5 AP4 shred shots a turn at 24", can get as many as 7 S6 AP3 attacks on the charge, and can have a 2++ for a turn, ehich is handy if you run into terminators or anything else that can easily ID you. He comes in at 205 points, but it pretty good, especially in 1500+ games.

I'm still fighting the good fight over in that thread, but for now I'd say the Shield Eternal and a TH is probably best. You're slower, but no less lethal once you actually start hammering away, and if you go up against an MC/SC/big bad of the week you'll be very likely to survive round one to bring them down to your speed.

The Burning Blade is awesome, I mean, a +3S AP2 at initiative sword is like the best thing ever. And Blind shouldn't be discounted. Sure, anything that gets hit by it is probably dead, so that's really only useful against MCs with unlucky Init. rolls, but it's still cool. I would love to see a fight where a CM with that turns an Avatar of Khaine into a whiffing mass.

The Teeth of Terra, is, frankly, awesome, it just suffers from AP3 syndrome. The Teeth of Terra is one of those weapons I would love to use in an army where I have the Burning Blade on someone else already, or possibly a couple of Thunder Hammers scattered on HQs. If your opponent is foolish enough to run an HQ with a 3+ or worse save, the Teeth of Terra will make very short work of them, and Rampage + Charge Bonus + 4A base with CM means potentially up to 8 attacks. That is NASTY. And the +2S means you're capable of going toe to toe with most MCs, gain ID against T3, and wound most other things on a 2+ or 3+.

I might have to build a list with some Thunderhammers floating around just so I can feel comfortable putting Teeth of Terra on someone. That thing just seems to shred WAAAAYYY too sexy-like to not stuff into a list somewhere.

I agree that a hammer looks good as a weapon choice on your commander, but on the other hand I don't like the idea of wasting that I5.

What about taking Honour Guard? You can give the Champion a hammer (unlike the command squad's champion option). As the champ must always be the model who issues or accepts a challenge, you can let the Master carry the Teeth and lay waste to enemy units with his I5 while the Champion bashes their character in a duel.

Downside: the champ is obviously less durable.

now the burning blade is good, but super expensive

I like giving the Thunder Hammer to the most survivable member of the squad, and in this case a 4 wound model with a 3++ invulnerable along with EW. The TH is also capable of insta-kiling everything short of toughness 5, while the Burning Blade is limited at S7. And regarding the Blind ability, I think it is more reliable to get the concussive effect from the TH rather than depending on blind.
