Hello, this is my first time posting here. I'm new to 40K and had a question, because I'm not sure how a rule is meant to be played. I've seen some battle reports on youtube with IG, but I am not sure if my opponent on Vassal is playing the rule properly.

Basically, I have a unit of Fleshounds of Khorne in the middle of the field. He has a big unit of about 20 Imperial Guardsmen scattered in his deployment zone. He gave his guys the order 'First Rank Fire, Second Rank Fire'. Out of 20 guardsmen, only 3 of his models are within 12" of my Fleshounds. But, he claims that because he has models within 12" his entire unit can fire 3 shots at my hounds.

I don't have an IG codex or anything, but in the battle reports that I've seen, I thought that command just added 1 extra shot per model?

Can someone clear this up, please? Am I completely wrong in my assumptions?

Your friend was correct in the previous addition. This rule has been changed via FAQ (page 2, right colum, second to last).

Make sure he reads that. You'll also need to take note of the third paragraph of "Rapid Fire Weapons" on page 52.

Thank you very much. Is that the IG FAQ or main 40K FAQ?

If no one minds, I have one more question. He is firing with a tank at my troops. It's night fighting, and the range is about 37", which means he could not normally target them. But, he says range is measured from the barrel of his gun. Is that true? I thought it drew LOS from the barrel, then measured range from the hull?

Not for a couple of editions now. Range to the tank is to the hull. But you measure the range of the tank's weapons from the end of the barrel.

...And you draw LOS from the mounting, along the barrel.

Yes the Imperial Guard FAQ.

Range is from the muzzle of the weapon (Vehicles & Measuring Distances p71 - second paragraph).

Weird, I don't know where I picked up the LOS from barrel, range to hull thing from. Pretty sure I saw it in a battle report.

Thanks guys for being so helpful! It looks like I ate an extra 20-some lasgun shots for no reason, because of the First Rank, Second rank shenanigans. =(

Wouldn't blame your opponent to much, it's a easy FAQ to miss. And just by reading the Codex he did seem to be correct.
