How does the AgraxEarth shade wash and the Dark Quicktone compare?

Need a lot of wash but don't want to buy all the $4 bottles if the Quicktone will work so I am hoping that they are comparable. Does anyone have any experience with the Quicktone?

Are you referring to armypainter quickshade?

If so, they are VERY different products.
Quick shad is a DIP (a thicker polyurthane coating with a tint to it) and agrax earth shade is a wash (a suspension of color in an thin acrylic medium).

There are tons of posts on dipping, but to give the executive summary - they are very different processes, and overall dips are a lot more difficult to control and use than washes.

If so, google "dipping" or check some of the vids on youtube on using quickshade or other dips.

best of luck!

I believe he is talking about the inks they sell.

IIRC its not even an ink but a premixed wash just like the GW stuff.

The "inks" are actually washes, and are also the same price as other comparable washes in quanity, so that was why I was thinking he was referring to the dips.

I can say their inks are excellent - do a few searches, they are covered here - basically they are the old GW washes.

I was referring to the quickshade "dips". I was told that if you brush the "dip" on that you get similar results

I like the quickshade as its easy to control when brushed on and can be removed while fresh with a cotton bud and mineral spirits to recover highlights. I have found it provides more consistent smooth coverage over a was and it does not leave those blotchy patterns. I still use washes for getting into the fine detail stuff. Quickshade does provide a protective coating as well but needs a matte varnish to dull down the glossy finish.

You could also try Minwax Walnut stain as it's said to be a close alternative to Quickshade and much cheaper.

I work with both Agrax Earthshade and the Armypainter Quickshade It is basically very different what you can achieve with both. It depends on what you want to achieve, but if you want to continue painting after you applied it, the only possibility is the wash. I use the quickshade to finish off my models, give them a little bit more shading and a protective coating, but while I'm painting I regularly use different washes.

i work ontop of quickshade all the time. just seal it first and you're good to go. you could even seal it with agrax if you really wanted to. airbrush it on. thin layers.

Ah well, I lack an airbrush... but as said, I'm usually finished with the model when the quickshade comes on it.

1.) Both sell in different quantities.
2.) Quickshade stays glossy, so you need a matte varnish afterwards.
3.) Quickshade is not waterbased, so you need different brushes and extra brush cleaners.
4.) Flow and consistency are different.

What kroot said....

While can get similar results, they are very different products to use.

If we go back to the op assertion "can I save a buck and buy wash in large quantitis" the answer is "NO" - because its not a wash.

However, if you are wanting to know "can use a very different product and very different methods, to get similar results and depending on quantity save some money compared to washes, maybe?" Yes.

Try both, see what you like better. I use both, but for very different jobs.

Best of luck!

The models that I am considering using the quickshade on are these Vostroyans.

Dont know if it would be better to use a combination of Nuln OIl and Agrax Earthshade or the Quickshade. What do you guys think?

Either one will give similar results, although you will have much greater control with the nulin oil and argrax earthshade.

Those models are fairly dark already, and have a lot of earth tones on them. The quickshade might not do as well as the washes.

I think you may just have to try it.

I know that does not sound like a useful suggestion, but dipping is a very experiential thing (regardless of if you brush it on or not - in fact brushing it on takes more skill) - one note - the actual army painter branded quickshade is fairly expensive - see if you can find someone in your area to borrow some first.

If you decide to go the minwax polyshaes route..many of them are darker than the quickshades, and thicker and take a bit more care to work with (I have used both).

best of luck.

okay, so I am going to with the Agrax and Nuln washes.

Where should the prospective washes go? I am thinking the Nuln Oil on all the silver parts and agrax everywhere else. What are your suggestions?

Just Agrax Earthshade all over should work very nicely. If you want to darken the metallic areas more then Nuln Oil over the top is my suggestion.
