It is best to be a pessimist. You are usually right and, when you're wrong, you're pleasantly surprised. |

The Warp and anything in it is, in a way, mirroring realspace and the emotions and memories of intelligent creatures. We know that Slaanesh was "born" from Eldar excesses, so we could well surmise that the other major Chaos Gods came to be in a similar fashion, though they may be much older. Perhaps there was even another Slaanesh before, but it was destroyed or absorbed as the emotions they feed upon were not yet strong enough. Either way, according to the Codex Chaos Daemons, the various lesser daemons exist as proxies of the major ones, in essence splinters that were borrowed a portion of their power in a bargain to expand their sphere of influence.
Each of the major entities - and there may well be more than the four we know (some say the Emperor's presence in the Warp is or sparked a 5th one) - has assumed a specific domain, and the motivation of the various daemons is merely to work towards having more mortal beings "feed" the Warp with the appropriate emotion, thus directly increasing the power of the master-entity that spawned them. You could say that Chaos is sowing and harvesting, like a farmer who wants to eat. In the end, the daemons are driven by an instinctive hunger for whatever emotion they embody, like a wild but very clever animal that is constantly kept hungry and waiting for prey.
The 6E rulebook has an interesting fluff section about journeys through the Immaterium, and when the Navigator tells of the amount of "pressure" in memories and emotions left behind by preceding ships rising, it almost reads as if humanity or other races that used the Warp for travel managed to litter it up with emotional baggage until it was enough to attain sentience. By itself, the Warp is nothing but a huge "make a wish" well, yet just like in the movie Sphere, people are simply unable to cope with this kind of opportunity.

To torment the Materium mostly, though some (mostly Nurgle Daemons) don't see it as tormenting but rather giving them blessings and gifts. They're pretty single-minded creatures.

They don't have a goal, just a sateless compulsion. What they are is the physical embodiment of their respective patrons, i.e. Daemonettes are still one with Slaanesh even though they have been given autonomy. So to ask anything about Daemons is to ask about their patron god.
What are the goals of the gods? To perpetuate themselves.

Daemons want whatever they represent, only much more than any human addict ever could. Kharn may sound crazy with his "Kill maim burn" battlecry, but he's probably a certified genius speaker compared to your average daemon of Khorne.

They want all sentient races to die because apparently the warp was a happy calm place until all the psychic races kept messing it up. Now the daemons want revenge!

Psykers are also some of the reasons daemons come inside the reality. Thanks.
