Is a maxed out squad of stormboyz with zaggy deepstriking a viable tactic because an i4 power klaw that can charge out of reserves seems incredibly strong imo

I'm actually not sure if Zagstruk strikes at I4 when charging, because the codex states it is because of furious charge, and that was changed in 6th edition to only give +1 str.

It doesn't make a lot of difference, since he will likely be hiding behind some boyz, and he should be able to survive a challenge from an SM sergeant.
I have never tried him or the stormboyz out, but it's one of the few assault from reserves tactics that Orks still have left in the codex, so they should be able to assault something the turn they come in. The only problem is that the unit is expensive and not very survivable, so expect them to get shot to pieces the turn after they come in.

Its i3 you have to remember furious charge doesn't give any iniative bonus anymore. The codex was written when it did.

That being said it works its just expensive. Stormboys in general are good but just too pricy. Also have to worry about mishap or scattering out of charge range

An ork with an idea tends to end with a bang.

Too expensive, only I3, challenge rules butcher the effectiveness of Zag as I believe he only has a PK when he charges (less so if it's a permanent PK, but still heavily)

I'd love to be able to assault from reserves again, but not at this price.

Before i sold my orks i ran zagstuk and a big squad of boyz nearly every game. If you depend on him to be your only ace in the hole then it doesnt always go so well. But he's great fun and i absolutely love the plastic stormboyz models. they just look awesome.

I usually ran a mek with shokk attack for ranged support. Zaggy and boyz were for the turn two scare factor. even if he doesnt come in it still makes people act a bit more conservative because it can be quite scary. like most ork things its not always effective unfortunately.

Surely Zaggy will be getting reworded rules in the new codex at the very least. And hopefully stormboyz in general will be getting a bit of a buff - they're fabulous models but currently meh rules-wise and points-wise. I'd love a 'flying circus' to become a playable and useful army build, and GW would sell loads of them.

Also amazing conversion potential. I built mine out of deff kopta blades and random orky gubbins.

Personally I want to see something like that Forgeworld Ork Bommer that can transport and drop 20 Stormboyz. I don't care how good or bad it is that thing would be in my army every game

It's a really good unit, you've got an AP2 weapon which strikes before initiative, it's the only unit in the game that can assault from reserves and it can never, ever fail a moral check. Even the assault rules for once work in our favor here, as the vulcha boyz are much more likely to make it into assault, even when deep-striking them in a safe distance (7").

However, it's 285 points, a lot more than you'd want to pay for those features. If it were 50 something points cheaper, I'd be awesome, but as it is, you're better of just getting two units of boyz instead.

An amusing thought just occurred to me:

What if storm boyz counted as flying creatures in the next codex? Basically flying monstrous creatures minus the monstrous part. They get sweeping strikes to attack people from the air and punch planes, grounding test result in a storm boy crashing into the ground whenever the unit is hit. That'd totally be worth 10 points/model.

Also, the best footage on stormboyz, ever, from the game Space Marine:

7 Ork facts people always get wrong:
Ragnar did not win against Thrakka, but suffered two crushing defeats within a few days of each other.
A lasgun is powerful enough to sever an ork's appendage or head in a single, well aimed shot.
Orks meks have a better understanding of electrics and mechanics than most Tech Priests.
Orks actually do not think that purple makes them harder to see. The joke was made canon by Alex Stewart's Caphias Cain books.
Gharkull Blackfang did not even come close to killing the emperor.
Orks can be corrupted by chaos, but few of them have any interest in what chaos offers.
Orks do not have the power of believe.

Yeah, various people have suggested amusing (and fluffy) mid-air anti-flyer close combat rules for stormboys, but it's a game concept not used for any other 40K unit (that I know of). Then again, flyers are a newish concept themselves...
