Proabably the wrong place for this but I recently played Necrons for the first time on weekend. My opponent was rolling reanimation on a 3+ after every phase. For example, I took down 12 of his 15 man squad in one turn but not enough to make him run. His turn movement phase, his unit stays put and he rolls 9 3+'s at the end of the movement pase so 9 stand up. He then shoots all 12. He then assaults and I win combat barely (10 vs 8). He does his reanimation and all 10 get back up on 3+. I lost the subsequent combat quite badly.
Is this right? I've heard Necrons are tough but seriously?!?

Even with a res-orb, Necrons pass reanimation protocols at best on a 4+
Reanimation protocols are a base 5+ without it
THE OLD WE"LL BE BACK RULE in the 3rd edition codex, was a 3+ with an orb.
I think the person you were plying was probably straight up cheating, unless he used the old dex

Your opponent is cheating. Reanimation only works on a 5+, 4+ is there is a orb in the unit.
If someone pulls that sort of bs, you have every right to demand to see their codex. Then beat them with it. Automatically Appended Next Post: iGuy91 wrote:Even with a res-orb, Necrons pass reanimation protocols at best on a 4+

Nope. It was a 4+, but you got to ignore things that would normally cancel WBB.
3+ res is only possible in apoc, iirc.

A necrons RP roll is 5+.
A necrons RP roll supported by a lord/overlord carrying a Res Orb is 4+.
There is no 3+ RP, thank god, in normal 40k.
Apart from that flagrant cheating the rest is legit.

As others have stated its a 4+ if there is an attached orb. The protocols are rolled at the end of every phase and the counters are either discarded or replaced with models.
If you killed 9 and he made all 9 5+ (or 4+ with orb) rolls each model will rejoin the squad. In a subsequent assault phase or shooting phase new counters might be generated and rolled for. Once a roll is failed though, that model is gone, and it's RP counter should be removed.
It can be even worse if the unit is supported by a ghost ark that can repair models back to the unit.

It's possible to get 3+ reanimation protocols, using an apocalypse formation. I believe there is also a forge world piece of terrain that gives a re-roll for 1s to them.
In the above scenario however, it looks like your opponent may have cheated.

notable that he should have done RA protocol, AFTER combat leadership, ie you won 8-10, he should have had to pass LD at -2, THEN make RA protocol rolls

Didnt RP used to only be at the end of the necron turn? It seems like alot more were standing up then mormal although he did use a 3+ instead of 5+ or 4+ with orb. Still seems silly that RP works multiple times in a single player turn.

I'd recommend next time if you are not sure of a rule? Ask your opponent to show it to you from their codex. They should be easily able to if it really exists in the format that they believe it does.

It could be as simple as him remembering a 4+ RP forgetting he had an orb then taking an orb thinking it would make it a 3+. He could have been wrong without intent to actually misapply a rule. If it were to come out tomorrow in a faq that drop pods do not move you 1" away from enemy models then would everyone that had used them as such be called cheaters?

Yes, in the most literal sense of the word? In this case though there is no such FAQ, his opponent was simply playing them wrong. That said, I don't think anyone is attributing any sort of malice to that particular play, most likely it is a simple mistake as you've given an example of.

Something important to know here: if you win combat by two, he'll be at Ld8 for the break test. If he fails, and you catch him and Sweeping Advance his unit, he CANNOT make reanimation rolls. Reanimation is done at the end of the phase, and Sweeps occur before that. If you sweep the unit, the whole unit is gone, and so none of them can come back! And if he doesn't believe you, tell him to read his FAQ. There's more relevant info in there. Edit: Easysauce already covered this.

Thanks for all the replies. I would hope that he wasn't cheating but he said it was 3+ army-wide because he had a res orb.
I've been worried about this before when he told someone-else he was playing that he had an upgrade to a tomb-spider that gave him an army-wide 4+ deny the witch roll. That Eldar player was beaten badly.

Ooh, that's another thing!
Resurrection Orbs only work for the unit itself, not for the entire army
And:
1. It's not a Deny the Witch.
2. It's only 3" range.

If he said it was army wide then ya he's cheating, the orb only affects its squad, and the wargear on the spyder is only a 3" bubble

Yeah, he's definitely playing both of those items of wargear wrong, neither of which have an effect that is 'army wide'.
Necrons are cool, but not quite that 'cool' if you know what I mean.

Really, he did it again with another player for a different piece of gear? Does no one know that you can ask to see your opponent's codex? That's what I did, when I detect something odd.
