Just take it slow. Even if all you did for the day was paint 3 lasguns, that's one step closer to the final product. It took me probably a month or two just to get 10 marines completely done with decals and varnish, but at least those 10 are good to go.

Every time I feel frustrated that I'm only getting the current batch of models partially done for the day, or that I'm ending up taking a day per model, or when I feel like not doing anything at all despite having free time, I just remind myself that any progress is better than no progress.

I find the opposite to be true; those times when you just can't get into it... I'm better of putting the brush down, and walking away.
Too many times I've forced myself through one of these lapses in motivation, only to set myself back much more time via stripping and starting again. It can be better to go do something else entirely when not in the mood for painting. I also find the motivation comes and goes in spurts. Like recently I've got well underway with repainting 50-60 orks that have been sat there waiting for me for months now. I'm glad I waited as I'm happy with what im laying down on them. But had I tryed to rush or force myself to do it the results would show it.

'Ain't nothing crazy about me but my brain. Right brain? Riight! No not you right brain! Right left brain? Right!... Okay then lets do this!!

I have found that my problem was my lack of interest in the army I was collecting and found them unimpressive, I have since switched to Dark Eldar and have 50 + infantry models 3 pain engines and loads of jet bikes and venoms painted to a standard I am very happy with because I find them a pleasure to paint and model rather than a chore like I did with the imperial guard.

I have found that the way to get motivated was to change my army, I am getting rid of my imperial guard in favour of dark eldar which are a joy and a challenge to paint.

I find just having something you enjoy about the army to be a bit of help. For me I did some custom fluff and explained how they are a successor chapter and some way made them my own. FEELING that this was something of MY OWN has created a drive all on its own. Although my progress is slow due to a busy schedule I have almost finished a tac squad in almost a month. Which is more than I have done in a VERY LONG time

I base coated, washed and put one layer on 3500 DA army in 24 hours using the assembly line and airbrush.

My fingers were sore and my back was hurting and I only got 2.5 hours sleep that night. However, I got loads of work done.

Here is my advice:

Work earns Salvation.

I think your problem might be all in your head...

Well obviously it is, right? I mean come one, lol... You're looking at the pile of models and you're going "oh man, I have 50+ models to do!" and it's stopping you.

Can the assembly line, it's not working for you. Try painting just one or two guys at a time and take it slow. Don't have all your toys lined up on your workstation, only bring out the ones you intend to paint. This will make it seem less like there is a mountain of work ahead of you, and hopefully once you get three or four models done, you'll start to see the fruits of your labour and be more inspired.

I myself, can't even do a full Tac squad, I have to break em down into groups of 5 and even then, I have to take a break and do something else, just to ease the tedium!

Gets along better with animals... Go figure.

It helps wen you have something that just isn't boring flat surfaces or loads and loads of cloth, the dark eldar for instance I paint in 3 stages, First I pick out what bits are going to be gold and what will be black/green, then I start my first edge highlight and I do about 3-4 in a go this way, then I do the poison vials etc then I do the second highlight, then I do the flesh loincloths and highlight the metals then I do the third highlight, paint the guns while they are on the sprues same with the helmets. Then attach and pose them and voila, I spend maybe an hour per model but I like the outcome so it's worth it, with IG I was spending similar time and not really being happy with the end results.
