Is the dark vengeance box set a good way to start a chaos space marines army if I were to convert all of the models in the box to chaos space marines?

I ask as I am trying to create a new chaos space Marine army as cost effectively as possible and I thought that this would be a good way to do it.

I already have an old metal Demon prince model and an aspiring Champion model as well as maybe five or eight chaos space marine models from when I used to play third edition.

Thank you for any help!

The Chaos models included are all pretty naff though. Most are not considered competative.

Chosen are considered expensive points wise and the Helbrute isn't widely used.

I'd say eBay was a better option for a job lot but you'd have to search for the right deal.

Will you be into painting it as well? I've painted mine but could consider letting them go along with some other Choas bits I have.

In that case no point buying mine. If you only want the DV models there are always lots on eBay. The set, if you are using both armies as well, is very good value for a batch of minies to paint and start the basis of an army. I don't think it's a very competative chaos army if that is what you are after though. Worth it for the rule book as well.

EBay has mostly (poorly) painted models as well so the set looks like a good thing for you. I really enjoyed painting the Chosen models. The amount of details on some of the others is extremely annoying though.

I bought the box, with the same idea in mind, but the new CSM look (Chosen and Lord from the box, new Raptors) doesn't really fit with the "plain" SM power armor. DV CSM have been twisted from too many years in the Warp, while DA would look more like recent Renegades. Of course, you could build a warband which included both.

Also, the issue LuckyCraig mentioned: maybe some minis won't be included in your army lists (usefulness, fluffyness etc.).

I would personally go ebay and buy several copies of the unit you like most (Renegade Guard? Buy tons of cultists. Renegade Marines? Ok, the DA then. ÜberChaos CSM? The Chosen and Lord), rather than the box itself. Yep, converting those CSM so they don't look alike it's worth effort and time, but converting the whole DA to Chaos would also be a great effort.

Hope this helps.

It really depends on your access to other bits and possibly your converting skills.

You can certainly use most of the DA stuff.

I converted my DV termies to Oblits using bits from my bitz box.

Chaos bikes are pretty good (but you will want more than 3)

The Libby is a Sorcerer

The Tactical squad is decent but you cannot take plasma cannons so you need to replace that weapon with something else.

Cultists are fine

Lord is Fine

The Helbrute with some converion work could be a Daemon prince (helbrutes are pretty terrible.)

As for the Chosen, they are terrible when used as chosen, especially given their weapons. I use mine as aspiring champions in my other units. You can also work to convert them to have better weapons if you have the skills and bits.

SO you can start a decent CSM army with it, but it will not be labor free.

Of course there's always the possibility that you can find someone who needs the SM and can trade you the Chaos!

Indeed, do not use the Chosen as Chosen. In their current state they are an incredible waste of points. But they look good enough to be back up Lords and Champions.

The Dark Vengeance Chosen do make great Chaos characters, and I've made champions and a Dark Apostle from them. It wouldn't take much work to make a Sorcerer out of one of them if your converting skills are decent.

I'm not huge on converting the Dark Angels into Chaos Marines, since they've got a lot of distinct iconography on them, especially the Terminators. They'd be a decent testing ground for converting though, since you get a bunch of them and they're cheap models to replace if you care to. Also, you could just trade the Dark Angel half for a second Chaos half in Dakka's Swap Shop, or sell them and buy more Chaos stuff with the proceeds.
