Firing a rapid fire weapon (1 or 2 shots) prevents a model from charging unless it is Relentless (which should answer the second part of your question).

'Rapid Fire' is a type of weapon, not a mode of fire. If you shoot with a Rapid Fire weapon, you can not charge, unless you have a special rule like Relentless that would over-ride that restriction.

Bikes have the Relentless USR.

This is why a lot of marines have both a bolter and bolt pistol. So they can still get a shot off prior to charging.

Rule of thumb: if it isnt an Assault weapon, you cannot assault after shooting it period without the Relentless or Slow and Purposeful rule.

Bikes are Relentless.

Throw "Pistol" in there too; most people forget that they are assault weapons when just looking at their profiles(but yet know somewhere in the back of their mind that they may assault after firing them).

So it would be: Rule of thumb: if it isn't a Pistol or an Assault weapon, you cannot assault after shooting it period without the Relentless or Slow and Purposeful rule.

This is my Rulebook. There are many Like it, but this one is mine. Without me, my rulebook is useless. Without my rulebook, I am useless.
Stop looking for buzz words and start reading the whole sentences.

There IS a Tau Pulse Pistol, carried by Sniper Drone spotters. As far as I know, they can never pair it with another pistol or any close combat weapon, so the fact that it's a pistol instead of Assault 1 doesn't seem relevant.
