Subject: Drop pods and combat squads

Hi guys, did some searching on the forum but I couldn't find what I am looking for.
If i take a 10 man squad of sternguard vets, and they have a drop pod as a dedicated transport, can I combat squad them both and keep both squads inside the vehicle?
Sorry if this seems like a dumb question...

Yes you may. Note that unlike before, you have to decide if you split the squad before deploying. This is an exception to the rule that only one unit may ride a transport .

That is fine, I would be any way, got a tournament between friends coming up and being able to combat squad those sternguard vets is gonna give me the edge on turn 1, taking out anything with a decent armour save. I am assuming that this does work because essentially they are still classed as 1 unit but they will be able to split up
10 vets with 10 combi gravs, aiming at anything with a decent armour save, knowing i can look to take out 2 targets, makes me a happy man!

The now 2 different units can got together in a single transport purely because (judging from the FAQ's to the older marines books) it is allowed in the Combat squad rule.
Making assumptions isn't safe with this ruleset.
But your plan does seem to work fine, Good luck with your tournament!

Why combi-grav if in a DP? Surely combi-plasma is the better bet. But yes in an exception to the normal transport rules a dedicated transport can carry the two combat squads it was bought for.

This isn't right anymore for any army. The latest rules have been explained above.

It wasn't even right before the new Codex. It was changed via FAQ when 6th first came out.

Beginning of 6th was Combat squad on deployment out of the Pod.
Now it is declarative before entering reserves in the pod and acted on upon deployment.
The Latter is what marley is talking about

No, it was FAQ'd at the start of 6th to during deployment before the start if the game. This is because both squads counted towards the reserve limit.

Meh, I dunno, I will accept you as correct.
I have too many rules and sets of rules rattling around my noggin to keep their dates correct.
