The Gorgon, Ferrus Manus, Martyred Father of the X legion, Iron Hands

Preview pic

This was a beautiful model to paint. The final photos for the Iron Hands Legion Primarch, Ferrus Manus. This is my first Primarch project and i'm relieved to have one under my belt. I own Angron and Fulgrim but indecision has forced me to put off the projects to later dates. Still wrapped up in the enthusiasm of Games Day I broke the seal and put primer to resin before I could let doubts settle.

I've written up a reflection on the piece for the blog. I hope you enjoy the pictures and any feedback would be warmly received (unless your a dick about it...)

Looks great, though the dead bodies are quite devoid of detail. No trim, no accents, no legion markings or insignia?

And now FW should steal these photos and use them as their stock photos.

Seriously, I wish they'd just give the models to one of the painting studios like LiL Loser, say "hey, this is free if you paint it and we can use the image" and then be done with it. So many models on the site don't get the display paintjob they deserve.

Really great job Lil Loser! Love. It.

Looks epic, Ferrus Manus and the Iron Hands are my favourite primarch and legion so this makes me extremely happy, looking forward to seeing more stuff.

This is the best paintjob I've seen on this mini so far. I'm not a huge fan of the way that Forgeworld went with the sculpt, but you've done a commendable job in proving that a great paintjob can salvage a crappy sculpt! (I was really hoping this was going to be one of your home-made Primarchs, like your Fulgrim. I was really looking forward to seeing what direction you took it!)

Ahh, I'm glad you picked up on this. There is a very particualr reason why I left off insignia (it wasn't laziness I swear).

Snippet taken from my blog:

...Karak Norn Clansman raises the interesting criticism that I should have added legion insignia to the dead/ dying space marines on the base. I left them devoid of detail for a reason. I agree with you, but for this particular piece I don't think having a back story is appropriate for the auxiliary characters - it is part of the tragedy.

Hector from the History Boys illustrates what I tried to achieve better than I can put into words.

Hector: "The important thing is, he has a name. Say Hardy's writing about the Zulu wars - or later - or the Boer War possibly, and ... These were the first campaigns when soldiers, common soldiers, were commemorated. The names of the dead were recorded and inscribed on war memorials. Before this, soldiers, private soldiers, were all unknown soldiers. And so far from being revered, there was a firm in the nineteenth century (in Yorkshire, of course) which swept up their bones from the battlefields of Europe in order to grind them into fertiliser. So, thrown into a common grave he may be, he's still Hodge, the drummer. Lost boy, though he is, on the far side of the world, he still has a name."

By not having a 'name' I am robbing them of a place in history, leaving them part of the unremembered dead. Istvaan has annihilated their history, as it will rob them of a future. This is part of the silence of the witness in my write up....

Thanks so much man! Means a lot. I'll be tackling Horus (hopefully before Forgeworld release theirs).

There's a load more Heresy stuff littered this website and on the blog. The Night Lords are a particular favourite of mine.

That would be my absolute dream job. The Forgeworld version is fantastic however - I absolutely loved what they did with Ferrus.

I'm glad you've thought this all through! My one thought of your intentions was that you might have left them that way in some sort of contrast to the main action going on, as they are nameless soldiers surrounding the big players in the scene. In this case I will simply say that the painting looks great, and bravo for thinking of the overall composition in that way.

Great painting, and an interesting (and valid) rationale for leaving them nameless. The funny thing is the contrast between this and one of the elements I really like about Forgeworld's publications - the fact that every (illustrated) trooper seems to have a name and a history.

It's an awesome job on ferrus except for one thing, his skin tone should not be that light, it's easy to tell from his facial features and hair type he is more than likely Hispanic themed, and in particular I think fw hit the nail on the head with their rendition

Very well rendered take on Ferrus. His pose explains why Fulgrim looks like he's skipping across Istvaan. Clearly the models are meant to interlock. I agree with Cincydooley - FW should take your images and use those if they aren't doing their own. It is annoying they often depict their minis without paint. Yours certainly could be displayed with their best. Cheers.
