As I understand it, when selecting an army for kill team, you use the relevant codex, and once the game starts the models then act independently. My question relates to codex selected wargear. For example, if I select Eldar dire avengers for kill team, and army the exarch with a shimmershield - which confers a 5++ to his squad, do they all benefit from that during kill team too!

If that makes sense.....

Isn't it that each model becomes a unit on its own?
That'd mean the exarch's "unit" would consist of ... him.

Vanished Completely

The latest rules for Kill team can be found at the following location:
www.games-workshop.com/MEDIA_CustomProductCatalog/m3460063a_Kill_Team_Rules_Pack_2013.4.pdf

The rule itself can be found on page 5, in the mission statement, under a paragraph titled 'Unit upgrades and Special Rules.' Seeing as it is a PDF posted on Game Workshop it is fairly safe to discuss. For the most part any rule generated by a model and granted to a whole unit becomes null and void, as only the single model can benefit from it. Like always, there are a few exceptions to this of which two are noted within the paragraph itself. The first addresses permissions granted to every model in the unit but do not originate from a single model, with the example being psibolt Ammo. The second is to address how annoying some set up rules can be when you are forced to roll at the model level, such as combat drugs, so they still let you roll for each unit and then apply to all within.

So some exceptions, but in the vast majority of the cases pass over things like icon of excess and other 'this model generates a boon to the unit' abilities at point buy.

8th made it so I can no longer sway Tau onto the side of Chaos, but they will eventually turn aside from their idea of the Greater Good to embrace the Greatest of pleasures.

I could be wrong, but I don't think the shimmer shield gives the squad a 5++ (in normal 40k, it definitely wouldn't in kill team).
I'm pretty sure it only effects the Exarch.

You'd be wrong. Previous book it gave the unit a 5++ in close combat, now it's straight up a 5++
