Hello, I am fairly new to Warhammer Fantasy, and I decided to pick up Wood Elves. So, I was wondering if anyone could give me a few tips on how to maximize their effectiveness?

I would gladly help you get into, in my opinion, the most tactically rewarding army there is. Leaning them and maximizing their potential will be hard, you will lose a lot, and you will be tempted by other, stronger/more balanced armies. I'm also not going to lie and say they are a great army, because many units are over priced. If knowing all this, you still want to play them, then you should start your training straight away. Why? Because everyone loves the underdog

Wood elf armies are split into shooty, combat, avoidance and hybrid. I prefer Hybrid because I don't think wood elves a good shooty army (Cannons>Arrows) and if you win, its usually because you pulled of a great charge in the flank after anvil'in a unit. If you have a preferred theme and point level, I could make a list for you. Have you bought any models already? If so then I would try and include them aswell.

Alex.

I don't have any specific models yet, though I do love the spellweaver Lord at lvl 4. Anything beyond that would be okay by me. Heck, if you wanna throw in what you usually take, that would be great too; I like learning what other people do with their armies as well as coming up with my own

I enjoy the whole level 4 beasts +Double flee list.

It isn't competitive, but it is fun to play, with a huge number of drops.

Not having my book to hand, I can only give you an overview of what goes in it.

Level 4 beasts: Moonstone of the Hidden Ways and a dispel scroll.

Noble: BSB, Asyendi's Bane, HoD Arrow.

18 Glade Guard, Standard, Muso, BoEF

5-7 * 10 Glade Guard, Muso.

2-3 * 8 Dryads

2-3 * 3 Warhawks.

2-3 * 5 Glade Riders.

2 * 6 Waywatchers.

2 * Great Eagles.

The Riders and Warhawks are interchangeable, depending on points.

But the whole ideal of the list is to use the fast cav/flying creatures to create charge paths for your enemy which leads into the firing lines of your glade guard, one unit at a time.

The learning curve is quite steep, but when you pull it off, it goes rather well.

See, I have played one game so far, and I enjoyed having my lvl 4 using Lore of Life spells. They really seemed to throw off my enemy (High Elves). I used lots of Glade Guard and lots of Dryads. I also tried Waywatchers, though I couldn't pull them off very effectively. Any suggestions for Waywatchers per chance?

I love Waywatchers in low point levels, because they are all but immune to shooting unless its in huge quantities and with good moving they are very good at avoiding combat. My Favourite Build is 6 waywatchers basic, appears directly behind an important unit and dares the enemy to turn around. If he turns around, then you win, because you can simple march 10 out of his front arc, as well as wasting him at least 3 turns movement (Turn, Turn back, move). If he doesn't then you have waywatchers in his back line that march block, shoot and threaten a rear charge on any unit you want. If you really like them add in a Noble with Hail of Doom Arrows so the unit can really hurt any unit first turn.

If you like Life, then I'd suggest taking at least 1 Treeman or a unit of 6 treekin. Both are amazing with life, and both are amazing in general. Treekin have amazing damage output and treeman can tarpit very well with Stubborn while grinding down a unit with Thunderstomp. Have you thought about a double level 4 list? That way you get both life and beasts, beasts being very good with Dryads and Treekin, Life being very good with treekin and treemen. Life gets dwellers to deal with hordes, while beasts gets spear to handle monsters. Then add a BSB to keep the treekin and Men fighting as well as 25% Glade guard and im sure you have a 2k army there.

I run a shooty/toughness hybrid. It doesn't bank too hard on shooty, or toughness but basically taunts an army to want to come towards you to take out the shooting so you can usually set them into traps.

Roughly it is about:

Lvl 4 Lore of Life, Power Scroll
Lord, Arcane Bodkins, BoL, LoD

Noble, HotH, Sword of Might, Steed, Wildrider

1x 11GG w/SB and Musician (Lord is in this unit)
3x 10GG

2x 8Dryad

2x 4Treekin
1x 5WR w. Musician/SB

2x GE
1x Treeman

This list lets me have mobility and shooting to hopefully guid opponents into Forest Spirit "crunches" that can trap them. When I started out, I realyl wanted to be a fast mobile army and overtime and experience I've kind of slowly cut down on mobility to add some real heavy punch to my army. It seems to do well for me. I don't give base GG any command because if charged they are going to get wiped out almost immediately any way so I don't waste the points except for the unit containing my Lord.

Hey, OP, I hadn't seen your thread yet, but I just posted some advice to the "Sucker for Punishment" thread--maybe check that out if you're interested in hearing what I think.

I like the Wood Elves; they're just tactically challenging and their army book is badly outdated right now. Still...hopefully reinforcements and new units and stuff on the horizon!

5000 pts High Elves 4000 pts, Warriors of Chaos 4000 pts, Dwarfs 3000 pts, Wood Elves and Greenskins too

Cannot express enough how right thedarkavenger got it with his list.

Waywatchers took a hit with the faq ages ago and used to be taken to stop pendant dreadlords etc running over the army so I am not sure if they are viable anymore.

Damn I cant wait to the GW legal team codex comes out now there is a dex that will conquer all.
