The other day on a (deeply heated) GW related post, a poster stated in his post, after his diatribe, as an aside, that (because of his dislike & disappointment) he had not played GW games for nearly 10 years now. He had all sorts of opinions and criticism about (current events regarding) GW & Warhammer, but IMHO he is full of, err, hot air. IMHO, imagine someone saying "Oh, that movie sucks because I don't like that director, and never mind I didn't see the movie..."

That got me to thinking, how many people here actually are current active GW players? How many people's hobby is actually just posting on game blog sites, that actually don't play! Do you spend more time playing the game, or posting on sites like this? Which is really your hobby?

Yes, I post here a lot and I play Warhammer 40k as often as I can. I tire of the anti-GW whiners not because I think GW is perfect, but mote because if it is that bad, why keep playing? And with many not even being GW players anymore, if at all, just makes it more monotonous.

I've taken the second option, by looking beyond the phrasing of the options and choosing based on its position to others (I happen to paint and model more than I game, but still play once a week most weeks.)

That said, everyone is entitled to an opinion on events, whether they're still involved with GW or not, and you seemed to have made a crucial, but false, assumption that somehow people who game regularly are playing GW games at all.

Are you really trying to say that someone who puts forward a reasoned and well qualified argument for or against something that it is completely invalidated because they haven't played that game recently? Just like somehow if someone puts forward a load of frothing nonsense it is somehow made more relevant because they play everyday?

I'm sorry, I kind of get what you're driving at, but your premise is flawed.

I picked the bottom option. Life currently doesn't allow me to play as often as I'd like (one game per year or thereabouts) but posting here keeps me in touch with my hobby. The "social life" barb is unwarranted though.

I play games every day, and now been painting more ! But rarely play 40k now, and few fantasy games last few weeks. But much easy to get in quicker games now, and much more fun when can vary it up. Mordheim is the best still mehehe

Not playing/buying GW games doesn't mean you don't have any opinion or that your opinion is automatically invalid. While I'd agree that not playing means that I'd weigh that poster's opinion about a certain game mechanic or unit's utility in the game significantly less than someone who did, not playing GW doesn't mean that you somehow lose any credence regarding fluff, model aesthetics, and general art design not to mention the always contentious corporate policies GW always seems to pioneer.

For some people, GW games are the only games in town (being played). If your choice is to play something you find mediocre but already own and still participate in the tabletop minis gaming hobby OR collect/buy stuff that no one plays locally and you have no realistic chance of using, plenty of people will choose the former. I don't like 6e 40k (don't hate it either but simply find it to be a moderate disappointment) and I can't stand GW corporate policies.. but I still bring a 40k army as a "backup" on my monthly trips to the gamestore as I can usually get in a game of that if the two games I actually want to play don't have any takers. I'd rather play 40k than drive 50 miles for no reason and only have a paint pot to show for it.

So long as you keep up to date with what's happening (even if you don't play) your opinion is still valid.

You can still comment on soccer games on tv, even if you have never played professionally, or if you haven't played in a few years (age, family, injuries etc) - you can still know what's going on

Er, I'm not sure if there's an option that fits me. I play regularly, and post on here regularly. Neither is more important than the other. What I really like about the hobby is the people you meet and the discussions you can have about it, the social aspect, if you will. That carries on to the internet, which is why I enjoy posting here.

The real hobby is the game!

And the game isn't by GW!

GW isn't 'the hobby!'

GW is just a company that makes toys and games that are part of a much bigger hobby than GW - and that hobby is getting bigger, while GW... isn't.

Seriously - there are better games, better miniatures, and better companies than GW.

The Auld Grump, who still plays Mordheim and Necromunda... and that's it for GW these days.

I play whenever I can line up a partner and I have many hours to burn. I browse the net all the time, when I'm on the comp and any time I'm on break at work on my phone browser, between lectures, etc.

I definitely browse more often than I game, but that's because I can read forums on-the-fly and all alone.

I used to play 40K and related games several times a week.

The addition of work, wife and kids to my life means I now only play once every two weeks.

The insane GW prices and downward spiral in quality of the rules and minis GW puts out means it is hardly ever 40K or related games anymore.

Fluff wise it is still my favourite game however and thus keeps pulling me in on-line.

So I guess I talk the talk but walk a different walk.

Presenting my own version of that single-fingered Greek salute to the OP, I don't play any GW games! But check my blog - I try to get as many games in as possible. It ranges from 1-2 games every month to 2-3 games a week.

I have been hobbying for more than two decades. When my local store closed a few years ago, I stopped playing, but kept posting. Now that another store has opened I am back playing again.

I do not think that you have to play to make informative posts about wargaming. A person's knowledge can come from reading the rules, watching games, and reading battle reports.

I chose the third one because this helps me get up to date to a good extent what is going in the Miniwargaming world, and I at least get to play 2-3 times a week at best and paint the models due to school and other priorities.

With that being said, I think it is a bit of a silly notion that you think all players that do not play 40k or do not like GW are automatically have invalidated opinions. There are people on both sides who are fanboyish to a high degree and have a rationale why they do or do not play anymore.

Just because 40k and GW is part of the hobby, it does not mean it is exclusively "the hobby". There are other games out there are better than the current editions of the Warhammers in my opinion, the two I play now, Warmachine and Infinity, are just a few of those. These two in fact made me drop Warhammer all entirely and go play these games since they do not really need a whole lot of time to set up and the rules are much better-written and clear (well Infinity is kind of debatable) so I do not have to argue with my opponent as we try to get our game in and the cost do not kill my wallet a whole lot if I want to expand on it.

At least my thought on it.

I game several days each week. I do not play GW Table-top games anymore though, havent for years. Nobody in my club playes GW table-top games. Because they are unbalanced and suffer from bad game mechanics. We play Warmachine, Malifaux and X-wing and FoW. As somebody pointed out before me GW is ONE company of a much larger hobby, there are sub-forums here on dakka dakka that are about those games also.

I really really hate Games Workshop as a company.. I do however love the lore of 40k, I think it is awesome. But we have started to play the RPG games from Fantasy Flight instead, Dark herasy, Deatwatch, only War etc etc.. And this has proven to a be a lot more fun for us. We have pooled all our armies and started playing the Fights in the RPG setting with miniatures. I highly recommend this because in the RPG lore things really work as the FLUFF reads, Dreadnoughts don't die from a single shot, Necrons are über nasty, Tyranids are mean and poor IPG is in big trubble, unless they hide in their big tanks hehe. Fantasy Flight has really done a good job with the game I think . And balance is not really an issue when you play RPG games...

Point is you cant play GW's rules because they SUCK, if you think their rules are okey, you really need to try some other games out there, that are not still stuck in a d6 system from the 80s...

I also think that GW as a company have become a cancer on the hobby, and need to be taught a lesson. And it would be better for everyone if people stopped buying their miniatures. And stopped defending them, because it gets annoying, I often feel when i get into debates with GW-fanboys, like Richard Dawkins must feel like when he tries to debate with people who don't believe in evolution. The evidence is right there but for some strange reason these people can't accept it.

no, I sold everything so don't play at the moment. ive thought about starting again but decided I wont waste my time considering the current state of it.

if by some miracle GW makes some sweeping changes and fixes or at least greatly improves their trash can of a game or some more competent company takes over I would happily buy and paint a new army and start playing again.

I'd also like to clarify that given the choice despite owning multiple armies for fantasy and 40k I'd rather play KoW, Warmahordes, Saga or Infinity. I do however like GW's LOTR game.

I havn't played for nearly two years now due to Uni, an internship, job seeking and not living within a convenient distance of any clubs. But I still paint my models and intend to resume playing eventually.

I do still enjoy Warhammer 40K and LOTR, and there are PLENTY of things, new models, expansions, armies and games I would love to play. I'd love to have a Space Marine Battlefleet Gothic fleet to add to my Raven Guard, I'd like to try out Necromunda. I'd like to get some of the new Hobbit releases, but have avoided the Hobbit line altogether due to prices. The ever skyrocketing pricing, and declining value for money has lead to me deciding to just complete and wrap up the armies I currently have, so I can move on to other great companies like Gripping Beast, instead of trying out new GW games and armies.

GW does still put out fun games and good models, despite plenty of fails and disasters. GW is blessed with a lot of talented sculptors, painters, artists, authors, and games writers. I've just now finished listening to Raven's Flight, I'm currently reading The First Heretic (Horus Heresy), and my current model project is a Raven Guard Sternguard squad using the HH Legion Recon Squad with the sniper rifles swapped for Umbra Ferrox boltguns.

But despite my enthusiasm for 40K and LOTR, the way GW is run and lead at the very highest level, the way it operates as a business, treats its customers with contempt and takes our loyalty for granted is driving me away. I've often been dismissed, mocked and insulted for criticising what I see as serious problems with GW's apparent business ethos. I've been asked, why do I post on (for example) "Fansites for GW", when I'm often criticising it? It is precisely BECAUSE I am a fan, or rather, a fan of its fantastic IP and its talented and creative people, that I criticise it. I want it to stop declining, and live up to its true potential.

Theres a phrase, "Lions lead by Donkeys". Well, GW is a company of Geniuses, ran by Ameobas.
