As a causal player of the game I generally like to surprise my friends with unusual lists that generally don’t make a lot of sense. I play imperial guard and my question is this : would making a single 50 man infantry with a lord commissar attached to it in an infantry platoon led by Al’rahem be worth outflanking and have showing up in the middle of the battle? It would be an awful lot of shots coming from the sides as well as a lot of attacks in close combat.

A blob squad with a priest and a lord commissar can be brutal in CC. Rerolling hits on the charge, plus a fist on the commissar and eviscerator on the priest can just shred things. The LC's stubborn and LD 10 will keep them in the fight, and that many hits (and re-rolls) will take most anything down. Less than fifty took out ten DC in one game and a Dreadknight in another with a priest and LC. I guess you could say I'm a fan.

If your going against an elite army then masses of lasguns, especially if you use First rank fire, second rank fire. then you can wipe the table clean very quickly....

I have played my last 2 games with a 20 man squad (with commisar), Al Rahem with Flamers, and a Special Weapons team with flamers and a demo charge.

It is a great little boost to your force. If an opponent sits back, you get up close, If they charge forwards, then all of a sudden they have to split their forces to try and deal with you. (on top of an outflanking squad of Harker Vets).

I would even be tempted to give at least one squad within the blob krak grenades, possibly all if can afford them. Makes them a little versatile you can attack stuff like ri ptides etc, I have not had a chance to test this though.

I would love to go with priests and make the blob bigger! I say go for it!

I mean hell you could even stick Al Rahem in a chimera for even more fire power

Who is he, What doe she do? You mean 4+ Armour save, 4+ Invulnerable save for the squad right? That would be awesome for getting shot with interceptor!

Azrael is a Dark Angel HQ. He gives the squad he's with a 4++ invulnerable save.

Don't forget power axes on all those sergeants. Makes them run through marines very quickly. (as well as giving precision power hits in CC).

I've now started running a 50 man blob (with axes of course), with 5 lascannon and Tigurius. With his rerolling of powers gives him a great chance to get the ones you want. TL plus ignores cover is excellent on that many guns. Though the 4++ is also excellent. Divination on him is awesome.

Outer Space, Apparently

It really depends on the army you are up against here. Thanks to 6ed rules, characters and soldiers armed with sniper rifles can pick out specific troops in a squad. This isn't good news for a Commissar, and even when the Lord Commissar gets a 2+ Look Out Sir! "save", it is still risky business.

On the other hand, blobs can be utterly devastating! standard guardsman armed with heavy weapons (I personally avoid power weapons on anything that doesn't have "veteran" in front of it ) is truly an epic threat to the enemy. The key here in my mind is to keep your blob as cheap as you possibly can - it is bound to be a main target of your opponent. And, of course, most blobs don't work without decent support. IG being the case study here, use Leman Russes or Manticore Batteries to soften up shooty units and other large masses, and let the Guard blob mop up what's left. Just watch out for blast stuff - one hit could knock out a giant chunk of the blob, rendering it useless!

In conclusion? pretty good option in a lot of areas, but you have to be on the lookout for pie plates, sniper teams, big concentrations of characters, and enemy units with lots of shots/close combat attacks. Keep these out of the way, and you can make your opponent scream for reinforcements and get extremely worried - the look on most player's faces after putting a blob on the table is totally worth taking one in the first place.
