So I'm looking to buy a 'reader' specifically for use as a platform for GW digital codexes and stuff.

My wife owns an Ipad, but I'm sure she'd rather I not have to bring it with me to games when I use a digital codex.

Can anyone recommend the best value between cheap/functional?

It just needs to store my codexes, that's it.

Thanks!

I use my iPad, and i have to say I am so glad that i do it saves me so much time and is a lot more convenient for me personally.

I don't think the interactive versions are available on android are they? That leaves you with an ipad if you want the interactive version. If you want the regular pdf, I'd recommend android over ipad and have no experience with other platforms capable of it.

I have pdfs on my ipad (ipad 1.. it was a gift, honest!) and it's much more convenient than lugging around books.

I use an ipad, since I got it for free and its pretty good, if you just want the plain jane version, find a cheap samsung or similar tablet and use that.

I am currently using a Galaxy Tab 2. I love it. I can use the nook app for the books on my tablet or phone (gs3)

I agree with the more convenient sentiment. way lighter than the books ( even the mini rulebook that just came out.)

iPad is the better version by far as it is interactive but I think they are slightly more expensive for the books and if you need to buy your own the tablet is more expensive than an android tablet as well.

The Google Nexus 7 takes some beating for value for money as it is as good or better than an iPad Mini but a lot cheaper. Beware the really cheap Android tablets as they tend to be a bit under spec'd especially for the screen, cheap screens can be a pain to read rule books on.

As the non interactive books are just normal ebooks you can use a normal ebook reader such as a Kindle Paperwhite, obviously they are in black and white but they are far better for reading than a tablet due to the eink, a bit cheaper to buy and the battery lasts weeks not hours.

So if you have plenty of spare cash get the iPad, the middle option would be a Google Nexus 7 (http://www.google.co.uk/nexus/7/), cheapest would be an ebook reader.

I think I've heard a rumor the newest version of Mac OS X will have some iBook support built in, but I cannot confirm this right now.

Working on someting you'll either love or hate. Hopefully to be revealed by November.

I do all mine on my iPad Mini. If you want the interactive versions of the codecies (and I wholly recommend them; they're great) then you really should go with the iPad for that reason alone.

If not, The Tab3 8 Inch is solid. We had a lot of problems with my wife's Nexus 7, from OS issues, to horrendous battery life. I can't, from my experience, recommend a Nexus 7. We do have one of the original ones though, so maybe the newly released version 2 of it is better?

The new one is completely different. The old one was also very good value but one of the updates for it borked battery usage, it was fixed with a later update if I remember correctly, worth checking you are running the latest version. Also if you have a dodgy program on there (facebook can be horrible for this for example) it'll drain the battery regardless of the make.

Looks like the Ipad is the clear choice. I didn't realize that the interactive features were Ipad-only.

Yeah, I use an iPad mini - it's about the same size as most e-readers, firsts in a jacket pocket and does tons more than a simple reader.

Of course, it's also more expensive, but then it's also more reliably supported, which is more important with a. Tablet Han with regular computer.

Remember that, with the iPad, you can still choose to use the cheaper eBook versions if you prefer. iBooks reads regular eBooks too.

I have a Kindle Fire HD 8.9", and I love it. It's got a good screen and good sound. As an Amazon Prime member, I get to watch tons of free movies and TV shows on it, and get my Amazon orders with free 2-day shipping.

The real questions to ask are: how much do the interactive iCodex features matter to you, how much does the extra cost if the iPad matter to you, and which ecosystem do you already support (if you're already a regular Amazon customer, the Kindle could be better, if you're an iTunes user, the iPad could be better, if neither, then a Google Nexus).

Yeah, whatever ecosystem you're already entrenched in is a big deal. It was one of my primary reasons for going iOS (I have so much already vested in iTunes). I don't regret it at all. But if you don't want the interactive codexes, then you'll be just fine with something else.

The interactive features seem really useful. The ability to just tap on the rule in the unit entry and see the rule pop-up..

iPad is the way to go. While the .pdf versions are less expensive, I find navagating a .pdf to be a massive pain in the rear. The iPad version still has a little of that but it's far less obnoxious.

I've been looking around recently for a tablet myself - to be used primarily for tabletop gaming purposes.

The 7" models look to be a great size and very light weight. Bigger than that and you start to get expensive, bulky, and in "why don't I just buy a small laptop" territory.

Most websites seem to agree that the best model is the google nexus 7 32gig. Good weight, battery, 2 gig ram, good processor, highest resolution, decent rear facing cam (5mp), android 4.3, etc.

The ipad is much bulkier and half the storage 16 gigs cost $130 CAD more. I also don't want to be bothered with itunes (I don't use it, but it may be a plus if you already do). The only positive for me would be the interactive features, but I can just perform a keyword search in the ebook if I want to jump all over the pages.

Up to you, but I'm going to pick up a nexus 7 for me and my GF.

The original nexus 7 was bad, the newer 2013 models got a majorrrrr overhaul. My friend loves his and you can do a google search for best 7 inch tablets. You'll see the nexus 7 spring up all over - I'm not bashing the ipad, it is just expensive and I've seen way to many people viciously defend apple "just because".

Quick question: Is Kindle viable for the the SoB codex that's coming out? All I see is it's gonna be an iBook.

Probably work

The eBooks are a little disappointing, to be honest, but the nice thing about them is that you can read them on just about any tablet, phone, or computer. The ones for the iDevices are really slick, but then you're locked in to a expensive delivery platform, especially if you're not going to use it for anything but. Summarily, the issue is that "iPad" is incompatible with "cheap".

See if anyone you know has any of the ebooks. Have a look. If you don't like it, then your option is iPad. Otherwise, any relatively cheap android tablet would do. The Nexus 7 is my personal favorite, and what I use for all my Pathfinder books. I have the second edition, but the first would be more than functional for what you want, and I'd hope dropping in price now.

it's going to be an ibook and a cheaper ebook. Kindle will be fine for ebooks, it's the primary function for it after all.

Thanks for the responses. I thought Kindle wasn't going to be an option.

You can press on keywords,e.g., bladestorm, rending, to get a pop up that shows the definition for that keyword. The SM one also has an army builder tool built in, not sure if the SoB will or will not have that feature.

For ipad users, i was wondering if anyone is using the1st gen ipad and how performance is for the interactive books.

I use an ipad mini for the ebooks but if the ipad1 works with the interactive books decent enough (no lag/crashes) i wouldnt mind getting 1 for cheap jsut for the larger display.

The GW Digital Editions FB page has stated that the SoB edition WIL NOT have the army builder function like the SM book. I asked. :-)

Also might be worth noting that the ebook version is usually around $10 (or maybe more) cheaper than the iBooks version.

Just to be clear, the iTunes version on ipad is the one that does all the fancy stuff, like tapping a keyword and it brings up the rule, right?

I have yet to buy a tablet, but I'd love to get the digital versions of the codexes. I know i'm aiming pretty high with this request, given GW's ever increasing lust for profit margins, but am I the only one who feels that every print version of the codexes should come with a code redeemable for the digital version for free? Like those movies you buy that come with free downloadable versions for phones and the like. Anyways, didn't mean to go off topic, just my two cents.

I agree, that would be a good idea. But like you said, GW would never give anything away.
