I seem a bit confused on witchfires and which hit automatically and which require a roll to hit.

It seems like most of the new powers require a roll to hit, like psychic shriek and of course smite.

The rule book describes older powers that have a weapon profile as also needing to roll.

What about ones that just say make a morale check? Specifically I'm wondering about fear of darkness the blood angel power. Does it have to hit after passing a psychic test before they make the morale test or do they just make a morale check?

Anything which is a template, or would use a blast marker, does not roll to hit.

Technically none of the non-shooting profile powers, those that cause Ld tests or psychic shriek, have any rules stating that a failed roll to hit has any effect on your ability to continue resolving the power, however if you read the currently 10 page thread you will see stating that simple fact does cause some contention.

Personally I play that any opponent wanting to use those powers without an obvious weapon profile, such as psychic shriek, do not need to roll to hit - firstly because the rules are broken, as you have nothign telling you the number of dice to roll , as required by page 51, and secondly because, UNLIKE with a shooting weapon, there are no rules linking the need to successfully hit with the ability to resolve the effects of the power.

What point is there in rolling to hit with PsyShriek? It's affect isn't a shooting profile. I'd add it to the list.

edit: didn't read all nos' post. He already said this. Sry for the poor skimming skills.

Because "reason". Seriously, thats so far the explanation on the thread all about it....no actual rules, just an assumption of "but, but, "to hit"!".

You have 3 options:
1). Powers without a profile do not function within the rules currently written.
2). Powers without a profile do not need to roll to hit like other witchfires. I believe this is the intended rule.
3). Powers without a profile need to roll to hit prior to applying their effect. Yes, this is a change from 5th edition. Yes, this neuters some powers.

And no, they aren't going to tell you how many dice to roll because you're a dirty psyker and should just read their minds already and be done with it.

What is wrong with you people?! ALL WITCHFIRES ROLL TO HIT (besides templates and blast weapons). It's undeniably and very specifically stated in the Witchfire rules.

Where does it permit in the BRB that a shooting attack, which Witchfires count as, does not have to roll To Hit if it doesn't have a normal shooting attack profile?

I haven't said that the RAW supports that they do not need to roll to hit.
In fact, the RAW breaks for witchfires without a profile.
So nothing is wrong with me, and the yelling isn't really needed.

Re-read pg 69 under witchfire if your still unclear.

Having a shooting profile or not makes no difference, they all need to roll to hit unless they automatically hit due to their sub-types. The sub-types themselves all clearly state with ones fire as normal and which ones hit automatically.

Psychic Shriek wound need to hit, something like Shockwave would not need to hit.

Would there be any chance of taking Rigelds suggestions and turning this thread into a poll?

I'd like to know how most people would play it. That way, the actual raw/rai discussion could be kept in the other thread?

Its because ordinance is still a word.
However, firing ordinance at someone isn't nearly as threatening as firing ordnance at someone.
Ordinance is a local law, or bill, or other form of legislation.
Ordnance is high caliber explosives.
No 'I' in ordnance.
Don't drown the enemy in legislation, drown them in explosives.
