open to any improvements! The goal here is to play fast, small points games so that i can get into the 6th edition rules. (I have not played a game since 4th)

Overall the list looks good, it should work decent in-game and would be a great start to an army that could be built off of. Overall I would use some more upgrades on your units and caster for a start an then grab more tanks or wraith units depending on which way you would want to go.

Thanks! just as a side note, I have some where around 3000 points worth of models from when i played back in 4th, so any recommendations that require swapping out units are all good!

The Twilight Zone

Welcome back! You have an excellent skeleton for a list of this points level, but I would tweak your seer and guardians.

Farseers are great in the new edition, and psykers are big so having the ability to try out psychic stuff is fantastic. Jetbikes also got a boost(eldar jetbikes in particular) so good use there. Your farseer is alone, which is okay if you can put the mantle of the laughing god on him. You can't auto grab fortune like days of old, but the stealth/shrouded+jink will ensure you have a 2+ re rollable cover save, as well as the bike and rune armor save. For powers, always roll once on runes of fate, keeping doom or fortune(maybe eldritch storm). Take guide if you get anything else, roll till you have to take guide. Then go to divination for either the 4++ invul save power, or misfortune. Take prescience if you get anything else, roll till you take prescience. Then telepathy, which has a great primaris, invisibility and hallucination are the ones you want, psychic shriek for default.

This power setup and the mantle gives you a hard to kill warlord who will buff your units like no tomorrow. With spare points take a singing spear, as they are slightly better than they used to be at S9 shooting and no 2 handed.

Guardians are fantastic in this edition, but even at the low points level they need a gun platform if on foot. You can't go wrong with anything but the missile launcher. Take what your list needs. Use battle focus and the bladestorm rule to cut down anything need be. The gun gives the option for long ranged support.

Rangers are better than before, but not great. They still serve a decent disruptor role. Although jetbikes are better 9 times out of 10, they are not bad if used right. Great for outflanking onto objectives and linebreaking.

Prisms are very good, as well as holo fields. Might be a bit much for the points level but the S9 lance will make any armor cry.

Overall, drop some guardians to get the mantle and maybe a spear for the seer. Guardians need a weapon platform. Spend spare points on guardians/rangers to taste.

The most important rule of 40K-Page XVII of the 6th edition rulebook, the figure at the top right of the page. "Shake hands with your opponent and thank them for a good battle and fun experience." Then go out for a beer.

So I can drop the rangers for a mantle of the laughing god, and either a scat laser or a bright lance for one of the guardian squads, or should I just replace them with jetbikes? Maybe drop holo fields on the prisim for another heavy weapon for the guardians? I will be facing random opponents so I would like to have all of my bases covered.

Wraithlords can be very effective at low point levels due to their high toughness. Your opponent will likely have very few if any weapons that can reliably hurt them, and even a naked Wraithlord will be able to handle any threat your opponent presents (close combat attacks against MEQs/TEQs, dual flamers against GEQ's, smash attacks against vehicles). They also make great targets for Farseer buffs.

You could run something like:

Farseer, JB SS 120
3x GJB w/cannon 61
3x GJB w/cannon 61
Wraithlord w/Ghostglaive, dual flamers 130
Wraithlord, dual flamers 125

Of course, the efficacy of this list depends on board size - playing on a 6x4 board in a 500 point game will be a weird experience, and the short/range slowness of the Wraithlords will allow fast armies to kite them on a large board. But on a smaller board, which for 500 point games I would recommend, this list could wreck face.

That is a very interesting idea. I thought about running something like this but I thought that 6 jet bikes would be fairly easy to shoot down and leave me with no scoring units. Is that not the case for low points games these days?

Your points are a bit wrong. The stock price for Lord is only 120p.
This list lacks some serious AT.
There's no reason to bring 2 Lords to a 500p game.
The Lords will be left behind when the bikes advance.

Not a bad list, but for the reasons above I'd concider another option:

Farseer - 120p
- Jetbike & SS

Warlock - 50p
- Jetbike

Guardian Jet Bikes - 61p
- Shuri Cannon

Guardian Jet Bikes - 61p
- Shuri Cannon

Guardian Jet Bikes - 61p
- Shuri Cannon

Wraithlord - 145p
- Glaive, dual Flamers and a BL

498 points and a bit more balanced maybe?
Not sure about the Warlock, but if you like it, take Conceal for 3+ cover. Nothing else, the Seer will provide all the nastyness.
You might also switch one Guardian-squad for Rangers.

Everything is ultra mobile but the Lord? Swap to Prism with Holo 140 and give your lock a SS. Or trade Seer and lock for Soliarch (Autarch with mantle fusion lance and mask on a bike)

My bad on the WL points, was going off of memory. I addressed the issue of AT - its called "punching". The Wraithlords won't be left behind because the bikes are intended to snipe objectives, not charge headlong into the enemy. Then you say my list is short on AT and you put a single BL on a Wraithlord and call it a day?

Again, my list is for a smaller board, not 6x4. I agree with the WLs being too slow on a standard board, but 500 pt games on a standard board will be vastly unbalanced in favor of mobile shootyness.

Apologies, didn't read the whole post.
About the AT: the difference is that the original list didn't have a single weapon capable of bringing down AV12/13/14 effectively (well yes, it had a SS).
You rarely see Land Raiders in small games like this but if it comes to that I'd rather have at least a single weapon that can do something rather than wait for it to roll from unit to unit bringing death.

Again, WLs can easily tear through AV14 with smash attacks. One Bright Lance is not going to reliably do anything against a LR.

tbh, I kind of liked where you were going with the guardians. You never see them enough nowadays, and everyone has mixed opinions on them. I suggest trying them out youself and seeing what you think. some things to remember:

1. Warlocks aren't worth their points unless they're in a seer council, or you're throwing one on a larger jetbike squad (6 or 9). At LD 8 they only have a 72% chance to successfully cast their power. That being said, they can potentially give your jetbike squad a 2+ armour save on a turn by turn basis.

2. Rangers aren't near as good anymore. The pathfinders are still alright, but you need to take Illic to gain access to them, which is a bummer. That being said they're still great at camping backfield objectives, like any other sniper in the game, but don't expect them to perform anywhere near as well as they used to.

3. If you want a footslogging army, an Avatar is your absolute best friend. fearless aura for your guardians, which WILL be dying, and he's so scary that he should act as a bullet magnet while the rest of your force gets a bit closer.

This is my input on your original list, which I liked the theme of.

Farseer, Mantle, Jetbike - 155
10 Guardians, Starcannon, Scatter, or BL (preference) - 110
10 Guardians, Starcannon, Scatter, or BL (preference) - 110
Fire Prism - 125 (in a 500 point game, holo fields for something in the back of your army isn't near as important)
500 points exactly.

Alternatively:
Avatar - 195
10 Guardians, Starcannon, Scatter, or BL (preference) - 110
4 Dire avengers, 1 Dire Avenger Exarch w/ TL Shuricat - 80
Night Spinner - 115 (consider moving it up with your army to make use of it's torrent attack)
500 points exactly.

Edited for grammar.

Well, yes. Assuming that the LR just hangs there waiting for the Lord.
Harsh fact: the unit with more mobility always decides if there's to be a CC-fight or not.
