I have a giant army of space marines I'm going to start assembling/painting this week. Both UM and IF seem straight up awesome. I love Calgar and Lysander. Blue is cool (bit overdone I think) and the Yellow is pretty great if done well.

Looking to play a super shooty army and both tactics seem pretty good for this. Probably going to use a mix of heavy HQs, Sternguard, Tac marines, scouts, Devastators, Centurions, and TFC.

Who's your favorite dakka?

Ultramarines obviously...I like the Fists though, but yellow is a pain to paint properly!

I'll back Imperial Fists, they're the most gunliney of the loyalists in fluff terms. Yellow can be... interesting to paint though.

It sounds like you would be happier as a 'Fists player.

There is the 3rd option, which is to do both. The codex allows up to ally with other chapter tactics, so you could have the core of your gunline be IF, and ally in some flexible ultramarines to spice things up a little. Of if thematically you want to keep a pure IF force, paint some of your units with a blue shoulder trim/pad/something else to designate them and use them with the UM rules. Which would let you use counts-as UM characters as needed.

Or you could do Crimson Fists.
You get to use the IF CT but still get to paint everything blue

If the thought of something makes me giggle for longer than 15 seconds, I am to assume that I am not allowed to do it.

Imperial fists all the way. Bolter rerolls are awesome as are tank hunting devs and dev centurions.

I second that notion. Out of all the sucessor chapters, they are my favorite! Heck they are my favorite anyhow. And they were the posters-boys
of the old Rogue Trader cover back in 1st ed.

From what you are describing you seem to be running a fluffy Imperial Fists and I think you should go with them.

Paint them imperial fist yellow.

Play them as Libators when you feel like smurfing.
