Do the chaos artifacts in the black legion replace a weapon? I see two arguments that can be made here. The supplement either replaces the use of the table on page 91 of the codex and no artifact replaces a weapon, or it replaces the items on the table and each artifact replaces a weapon. The permission to use alternate artifacts is on pg 116 of the supplement btw.

I think it needs and FAQ, and I don't think it will ever get one. What do you think?

I think the Black legion Artefacts are supposed to be treated exactly the same as the CSM artefacts:

A model can replace one weapon with one of the following.
Only one of each Chaos Artefact may be taken per army.

They just forgot to add bullet point number 3 to the Black Legion, though, and I agree that needs a FAQ.

3: Does not replact one of the character's weapons.

In CSM, point 3 is added to the Dimensional Key and the Scroll of Magnus. Items decidedly NOT weapons. I think this can with some certainty be carried over to The Crusible of Lies and the Skull of Ker'ngar, as there is nothing weapon-like about these either.

The Spineshiver Blade, the Hand of Darkness and the Eye of Night are definately weapons, so no question there. These replace a weapon.

Last Memory of Yuranthos is a bit more tricky, as it is not a weapon in itself, but add a Nova power with a weapons profile. My gut feeling is that it is not a weapon.

I would agree with you, but the Skull is exactly the same effect as the Shield Eternal in the space marine book, and that does replace a weapon. Though it is the only artifact/relic I can think of that is decidedly not a weapon but still replaces one.

The Shield Eternal is just that, though. A shield. As most shields go, you need a free arm to operate it properly. It has the added +3 Invulnerability save that comes with a regular Storm Shield, which the Skull of Ker'ngar does NOT have.

Never heard of a buckler so.

The combat shield still a thing in C:SM? I'd look at that too.

It's not the size of the blade, it's how you use it.

Hence the word "most", as opposed to the word "all".

But to further murky up the waters, the Shield eternal is a storm shield, and no model that can take the shield eternal that can take a mundane storm shield has to exchange a weapon for that mundane storm shield.
