Hi All,
I was thinking of taking the following to a tournament:
Lord with power weapon, aura of dark glory, melta bombs
Lord with power weapon, aura of dark glory, melta bombs
Troops
20 chaos space marines, one plasma gun, one melta gun led by aspiring champ with power fist
20 chaos space marines, one plasma gun, one melta gun led by aspiring champ with power fist
20 chaos space marines, one plasma gun, one melta gun led by aspiring champ with power fist
20 chaos space marines, one plasma gun, one melta gun led by aspiring champ with power fist
Idea behind the list is that I try and overwhelm the enemy with 3+ bodies. The units I tried to keep generalist so they can perform whatever role is required.
Has anyone tried this out and if so could provide me with some insight into whether this could work?
Thanks in advance! Crispy

Looks like a lot of footslogging, You'll lose quite a bit of people by the time you can shoot normally if you're going against tau. Anti-vehicle? Again your guys are footslogging so melta is not very useful and plasma can only do so much. Anti-air? bolt-guns will snap fire and have to roll a 6 to glance if you hit the rear of most fliers. Riptides Nova charged accelerator will tear those troops to pieces, or vindicators, or Baledrakes, and a number of other things. (stuff you can hardly kill before they do lots of damage to you) Chaos Lords, 100 points per model. Are they able to really kill enough/have the perks to make back those 100 points? You need an HQ with survivability and the ability to kill, if you don't do that just strip him naked with absolutely nothing and hide him the best you can. I would highly recommend rhino's if you want numbers of infantry cultists can be good blobs of fodder Obliterators and baledrakes are always the competitive option theres a lot of ways to play so I'd just recommend making your army more balanced

Thanks dude. Some very good points. I have plenty of rhinos and a hell drake so maybe I'll bust those out instead.
I was just curious to see if anyone had used a list like this and whether it worked or not.

I'm sure it could work. Most people take the Chaos Lords for all the options and troop choices they unlock but it seems thats not what you were doing.
You could do this, which is minor changes to your list. (personally I'm more of an elite for troop choices kind of guy though, and I wouldn't give all the champs PF either)
HQ: Huron (160)
Troops: (1240)
10x cultist
10x CSM (2xplasma) rhino, champ PF
10xCSM (2xplasma) rhino, champ PF
10xCSM (2xplasma) rhino, Champ PF
15xCSM (2xmelta), Champ PF
15xCSM (2xmelta), Champ PF
Fortification: (100)
ADL
Total of 1500 points
Cultists man the ADL, Melta CSM infiltrate/outflank with Huron. Rhino's push forward shooting plasma out of firepoints

One of the advantages of chaos over other armies is the minimum numbers allowed per unit...
If you divide into 7 troops (5 man), then that can spread your attacks around...
Additionally, make half of them meltaish, and the other half plasma...it will keep your fire focused.
I always use the rhinos for CSM, it's the only value delivery system they have.
≈ 875 pts
I would go even nuttier...add 2x regular boltgun 5 man noise marine squads with the noise champion and a doomsiren in rhinos
312 ptsish
300 points for other crap, baledrake and an HQ?
If you rhino wall well, even tau would have trouble shooting at you...

Only 6 troops allowed, unless you are considering him keeping the Lords and turning towards the BL supplement where one troop choice would take VotLW and one Chaos Lord would take VotLW Automatically Appended Next Post: If you're not using the NM for sonic blasters or blast master, why not do PM? high toughness, FNP, fearless (like NM), wound on 4+ in combat

Not necessarily very helpful, but if you're going footsloggin marines I wouldn't go with Chaos.
I don't think they have the necessary benefits/support to make them that scary. Although having to deal with 60+ Marines at 1500 isn't easy for a lot of armies. But for example, BA have Sang Priests to spread FNP about, and cheap enough Devastator support. Space Wolves have cheap Long Fangs, Fen Wolf screens, Counter attack.
But I do like Chllls version of the list, Huron is probably as good on his own as the two Lords, ADL for some anti-air, you've got the 'magical' 60 marines, more synergy in the squads and three rhinos to speed things up if need be, or just act as mobile LOS blockers. Until they die that is. The only thing I don't like is there is no HW support, I think its useful for two reasons, one the obvious long range damage to hurt/take out dangerous units sooner than the other guys can, and they are also a distraction. If you want a good number of those 60 Marines getting to the enemy lines (at least rapid fire range) you're almost certainly going to need something to help. The rhinos do it a bit, but if you had two squads of long range fire support, something like a Riptide would have to shoot back at them, rather than the squad of 15 Marines 18" away.

It's always smart to have HS or FA but I was trying to keep with his theme. If he still wanted 6x troops but get that fire support. make the 15x squads down to 10x and change all the PF to PW. He now has 180 points that can be put into:
A) Tri-las predator+ 40 points
B) 2xMoN Obliterator +28 points
C) 7xHavocs (4x LC) -1 point
D) Baledrake (freaks some people out, the other options are better long distance cover fire)
