What is better to spend money: 1 - 2 Hydra or some flyer for air defence?
Hydra is risky, because Spess Merheens always use something, that can destroy vehicles no matter how they are hiding.
Flyer problem is big size - difficult for transportation, can be easlily broken in bus.

You can reserve the hydras to bring them turn 2 or when some flyers are there (so they dont die before).
Or if there are some skimmers, they can start on the board (tau, eldars, DE)

Is it difficult to maneuvering with flyer? It seems to be problem, when table is small and target will appear from back side. And Hydras can always rotate turrets any side. But flyer is like... more "badass"? Thunderbolt has autovannons and lascannons that can pop any other flyer.

have you thought about taking a Aegis with Quad Gun, its more survivable than a Hydra, and can fire at ground targets. plus a nice 4+ cover for any gents or vehicles camping behind it.
Then again, IG does have the best flyer in the game, 3 TL lascannons will make short work of any other flyer.

I think you're thinking of the Hydra's ability to ignore Jink saves, which is actually pretty useful.
I'd suggest going with 1 Hydra and an Aegis w/ quadgun.

Yea, but Hydra has AA targeting system or something like that. The Aegis is Cheaper(cash and Points), easier to transport, has Interceptor, and provides cover for your guardsmen. Also the AA targeting system just removes the Jink save. PS: the guns Str, AP, T-L, and # of shots are the same.

Game wise the vendetta is much better in almost every way. To transport you need a foam case (I have a plastic tote with foam I cut for all my stuff it costs ~30 usd for a 2000 point army carry case this way).
If your concern is money and transporting then the ADL with quadd gun is the best buy as it can fit in a coat pocket and is pretty tough if assembled correctly (don't glue the top part of the quadd gun).

ADL with Quad has Skyfire and interceptor ..(it can shoot down the flyer on its turn when it comes in before it gets to shoot)
Hydra..Has Skyfyer and Anti Jink..which means no jink save for Skimmers and flyers alike ..but it does not have intercept ..
SO for the points and the money one Hydra and one ADL with Quad ..gives the best of both worlds and the hydra can hide behind the ADL getting a cover save ..and you can jam a CCS on the Quad allowing it BS-4 instead of BS-3
Enjoy...
3 TL Lascannons makes the Vendetta the best dog fighter in game along with the fact that it can drop a group of Vets off in flight ..(love that grav chute insertion) Automatically Appended Next Post: Besides for a hydra you prolly have an extra Chimera lying about anyway ..just add the appropriate turret ..(your turrets should be removable for transport) ... Buy the stock ADL it fits for IG and comes with the Quad Gun..

Hydras are almost over-powered currently in my opinion. They are cheap, have Sky-Fire and throws out 4 S7 shots (TWIN LINKED) per turn. I've been Hydra spams b4 and it hurts...

And if there is nothing in the air they are totally useless (no Intercept = only snapshots at ground targets). Quad Gun is much better.

Not true, Skyfire also lets you fire at full BS against skimmers.
Also, there are lots of FMCs out there too and you NEED to get hits on those to take them out.
If you're already taking an ADL then a Quad gun is the cheaper, more flexible option though. If you're taking an ADL to get a quad gun then you're spending 25 more points.

To be fair for 25 more points you are getting T7 which is much better than AV12/10/10, interceptor, and the ability to fire at BS 4 or 5 rather than BS 3. These are pretty huge.
If you only see FMC, flyer, and fast skimmer armies then the hydras are pretty good. The problem being that Tau exist and their best builds tend to take nothing for a hydra to shoot at. There is also a pretty good daemon build with no exposed FMC called a screamer star. And the new tourney white scars biker build which can be done completely without flyers as well. This is not to mention other popular non tournament winning builds such as almost every ork build and many casual players.
I like the hydra model but it is far too focused on its task to be useful in every game like a quadd gun is.
