Just picked up a bunch of Eldar on the cheap, but have only ever played against Eldar once so I know little about them.

Wondering how this team plays, and whether what I've got so far is any good (semi-comp levels of good, not ultra-comp)

Is Eldar viable on foot, or without taking much in the way of Wave Serpents? Can Eldar do close combat or short range shooty? Also are Wraith Lords any good - they're going cheap online so I imagine they're not, but I've always thought they were pretty cool.

Stuff I grabbed;
Farseer, unknown gear
Howling Banshee super exarch thing
5x Striking Scorpion + Exarch
4x Dark Reaper
5x Dire Avenger + Exarch
4x Rangers
15+ Guardians and Weapons Platform
2x Harlequins

Stuff I could get;
Wraithlords
Fire Prisms

Cheers

Edit: Also, how best to combine this with Dark Eldar? Got a few of those coming as well, no transports yet so they won't be any good for a while I think

Edit #2: Has there ever been an Exodite codex/supplement/etc, even in older editions? Converting up eight dino rider eldar and wondering how to use them in friendly games. A legal counts-as would be nice too, not sure if they could be jetbikes because they're not exactly hovering.

Edit #3: Avatar, worth it? He's pretty cheap and super cool. As long as he's not super trash then I'm keen

You should really check out Reece's batreps; http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/recentTopics/showTopicsByUser/0/2776/17.page

He plays some really good footdar lists.

You are going to need to get a few extra models here and there just to bump the units up to minimum size. Right now what you have for full units are;
Farseer, unknown gear - is this a spear? If it is it is a singing spear. This is a great addition to any list.
Howling Banshee super exarch thing - probably Jain Zar, good news is she is a cool model with interesting rules...bad news is she is really far from competitive
5x Striking Scorpion + Exarch - Does the exarch have a claw? If he does this will be a great harassment unit. If he doesn't they will be an okay harassment unit just lacking the oomph.
4x Dark Reaper - This is a great unit with star shot missiles. You can make this unit top level competitive with a Tau buff commander. I would get an exarch to for the unit and you will need something to either bunker them or tank shots for them to make them top level. Don't forget to use guide and doom to unleash this unit.
5x Dire Avenger + Exarch - If you are running foot you will need to up this unit size to 10 to see any positive effects.
15+ Guardians and Weapons Platform - This is a good unit but you will need to decide soon if you are goining to be Biel Tan or Ulthwe Either way these guys can do good work with good play. Don't get trapped into giving them a bright lance and shooting pot shots at the opponent. Guardians need to get into shucat range and annihilate something.

These models will not make a minimum unit;
4x Rangers (+1 to minimum, very decent scoring unit)
2x Harlequins (+2 harlies and +1 shadowseer for a semi decent unit, not very good in current dex)

I actually like 2x brightlance, 2x flamer wraithlords. They are not the most competitive units but they can be used to good effect.

Dark eldar can be done really well with a minimum warriors and beast pack, baron + helions, or ravager + warriors. These all work well but make sure you get something from the rest of the choices. DE don't really add that many things that eldar cannot do so make sure you find one of those.

I would be okay with jetbike dino riders. Slap some wings on them and they would be even better.

In an ulthwe list the avatar is almost mandatory. In most footdar builds the avatar can find a place but again he going to be a tough choice in a tournament. There is a fun elfzilla list with the avatar and 3x wraith-lord/knights.

Welcome to the Craftworld Dakkamite!

Non-Wraith Footdar are fun to play and a lot more mobile than their counterparts in other Codexs, due to Battlefocus on everything and almost everything being an Assault weapon.

That said, the main problem with Footdar is that Dire Avengers are too pricy to be an effective horde and Guardians just don't get saves and aren't Ork or Guard-levels of cheap for that to be ok.

Coversaves or an Invun on Guardians are a must as even bolters ignore their armour, as is some form of Fearless but at the end of the day, if your facing down Tau, Mechdar or SM with Thunderfires or any kind of serious artillery, your gonna have a bad time.

Ok, so anyway for a potential list with what you've got, plus 2 Wraithlords, cause you know, Wraithlords are awesome!:

Avatar
Farseer (Roll all on Divination, hope for the 4++!)
20 Guardians, 2x BL (you'd need another Platform and another 5 dudes, but you want this)
10x Dire Avengers with PW/SS Exarch (again, another 5 dudes)
5 Rangers for objective camping (1 more dude)
4 Reapers, all with Starshot Missiles, Exarch with Fastshot
2x Wraithlords with twin Brightlances

1250pts or there abouts.

That'd put out plenty of AT to take down threats to the blob, while still keeping mobile on foot and having 3 MCs to atleast approach saturation.

For a fun approach, you could field a 1000pt list without getting too much stuff by dropping the Avatar and the Wraithlords and sticking Jain Zar in the Guardian blob. She might be the only thing that makes it across the board, but atleast she's pretty potent in CC!

He plays some really good footdar lists.

Eldar is quite difficult to manage for a newbie. I'd stay away from a foot list in the first place.
Instead, I'd opt for a list with a few Serpents and Warwalkers as heavy support. I'd start at the 1000 pt level to get a feeling how Eldar plays.

Oh there is no doubt footdar is much harder to run than serpent spam. However if you get it right it can be a really good army. Is it viable in a regional tourney level; yes. Is it easy to play or master; NO.

BTW I sometimes run an interesting footdar army with 3x D cannon artillery and 2x wraithlords with 2 jetbike units and some smattering of guardians and avengers. So far it has done pretty well though I would not be confident in its performance against a flyer heavy list.

wave serpents and jet bike lists are dominating the meta here.

I have jet bikes. They're being ripped apart to make looted Ork warbikes. Not really interested in running them, or wave serpents.

I saw a Wraithknight going for super cheap... its so gigantic... can't resist urge to buy the damn thing. Is it any good?

The Farseer is this one;

Spoiler:

Whenever I say good, I mean good enough for casual or semi-comp games. I'm not big on the ultra serious events, otherwise I'd be taking a Serpent/Jetbike list or whatever it is.

Cheers for the advice guys. I'm gonna go look at Reece's posts

That is okay. Footdar is hard to play but if you get good at it you can be a pretty brutal player. You may want to consider an "eldery" firestorm redoubt if you have major flyer (aka helldrake) problems.

Wraithknights with the default loadout are absolutely incredible. They are fast, hit reasonably hard, and give all important board control to an army that struggles with good board control units. The SL-suncannon combo is not bad but is much more meta dependent.

That farseer can be used as a singing spear one with any of the other wargear options (except bike).

Also check out http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/535556.page Grant plays some interesting double death star builds.

Just one thing to note...those Eldar jetbikes you're retooling to your warbikers...you sure you want to? They are one of the more expensive models out there, might be better to trade them for something. Sorry for OT, I just had to say something.
