Just wondering what everyone thought about the 40k computer games?
I personally have enjoyed a fair few of them over the years but none of them has ever quite checked all the boxes.
My favorites have been:
Dawn of War 2 (I wish they had made some levels different just for variety)
Space Marine (except the god awful health system)
and the old space hulk for the PlayStation

I liked Space Marine just because it was simple fun, and quite immersive. The multiplayer was also pretty good.

There was an ancient old turn based strategy game out of second edition days called Rites of War. Played the demo as a kid, had absolutely no idea what I as doing, love it for nostalgia value.
I'm sure it's not nearly as awesome as I'm remembering.

The only 40k game I played was SM so I'd vote for that.
GW should make a Space Marine spin-off where you play as an ork.

I loved Space Marine, (but the collector's edition I loved it so much).
But I'd have to say I really enjoyed Soulstorm or DoW2 the most. I put soooo much time into those games.
Supposedly (if you watch ItmeJP on Youtube), one of the writer/developers that is DM'ing on his Dark Heresy campaign is developing a new 40k game that was the MMO, but has changed...not to shamelessly plug.

I just finished Space Marine and it was pretty good. I was a little frustrated with it because there were a few minor things they could have polished and/or fixed which would have turned a good game into a great one. Overall it was a lot of fun to play and I'd be on board if a sequel ever emerges.

Well lets see.
I've played Space Marine (on Xbox, does that count?), DoW and DoW 2. Of those I'd have to say DoW is my favourite. More specifically, Soulstorm.
I really want to play the 'new" Space Hulk game but finances are tight right now.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

The original Dawn of War was my first taste of 40k ever. Played Dow II, Chaos Rising, Retribution and Space Marine. Spehss Mehreen was decent but not super astonishing, although I like that they made an effort to improve the rep of the Ultrasmurfs and some of the armor design (goddammit GW, why can`t you make loyalist armor more ornate on the tabletop). I think I liked the original DoW the most because of its classic RTS feel, but I've never had more larfs during a game than with the Retribution Ork campaign: that was made of win distilled with awesome.

Whereas to an englishman the taking of a sledgehammer to crack a nut is a wrong decision and a sign of mental immaturity, to a russian the opposite is the case. In russian eyes the cracking of nuts is clearly what sledgehammers are for.

This is a good point; Space Marine was the beacon of light for Ultramarines in the era of the Spiritual Liege.
Personally, Space Marine or Dark Crusade for me. SM was the first really immersive 40k game I had played; Dawn of War is great for fun, especially the later expansions with mods, and has some well-done fluff, and Dawn of War 2 was a better narrative structure, but SM's perspective and quality was fantastic. Audio logs of frightened, normal people, the enormity of Imperial architecture and Titans from ground perspective, excellent audio and visual design. Not the best game ever, but did wonders for 40k in my opinion.
