Just reading through the new codex, Iron Hands have grabbed my attention. I'm building up a 1500-2500 pt Guard force and I want to have a few allie attachments of 500-1000 pts of marines.

Iron Hands seem to have a great potential to ally with, but I have a few questions.

1.) W/Techmarines having to be in base to base contact with a vehicle means they would need to be constantly nearby any vehicle... So I'm looking at having a Master of the Forge HQ and some Techmarine models in the list. Can I give them jump packs without losing the servo arms or basically the repair mechanisms?

I don't really understand how useful these models can be without a 12" movement...I'm assuming the model would not change simply because of the jump pack but ive never seen/heard someone do this. Honestly I've never seen techmarines used at all so it makes me curious as to how to center and army around that type of model.

2.) Can techmarines go into chimera's with platoons?

I really like the look of the Sons of Medusa and want to plan out a definite list before I just start buying models.

Some Tomb World in some galaxy by that one thing in that one place (or Minnesota for nosy people)

I'm pretty sure techmarines can't take a jump pack

Also, BB can't be in allied DTs (ICs with a unit gets very touchy with sime of the wording so I won't get into that)

Ah you're correct... wasnt paying close enough attn. It seemed like something that might not work. So how can a techmarine/master of the forge be useful for both my guardsmen and the marines? They seem incredibly immobile for what their purpose is.

You can always put the master of forge on a bike. This will increase the distance he can move in movement phase.

VanHallan, I had the same idea, however, know that your Master of the Forge cannot repair IG vehicles. This unfortunately was FAQd some time ago, apparently the MoTF and Techmarines are above working on the likes of inferior IG technology. The only one that can repair IG is IG, only one that can repair SM is SM. I know, its stupid.

However, here's my idea of an IH ally detachment for Imperial guard that I think would work quite well-

Captain-
Artificier Armor
Bike
Stormshield
Bolt Pistol (he is the tank for the following unit)

Bike Squad (scoring) 4x Marines
4x Gravity Guns

Marine Squad
PG/LC
--or--
Scout Squad
shotguns, Land Speeder Storm, in reserve, outflank (to claim an objective late game?)

Elite-
Ironclad Dreadnought + Drop pod + bad ass weapons
--or--
Legion of the Damned- deep strike in
Either a tank hunting squad or assassination squad, Meltas for tank hunting and plasma for unit assassination.

Heavy Support-
Thunderfire

Not sure how much it comes out to, but thats what I had in mind. What do you guys think? Good addition to IG?

Where was it FAQ'd? I could have sworn the only place I saw an FAQ to that effect was the 5th ed Marine codex...meaning that FAQ no longer applies. Still, my FAQ-fu is very weak, so it's probably out there somewhere.

Look near the end of the BRB FAQ. Thats where it is. I tried having a Dark Angel tech marine with a power field generator :(

40k is as exciting as riding a pony, which doesn't sound very exciting.......

But the pony is 300 feet tall and covered in CHAINSAWS!

I've checked the FAQ and couldn't find it. Which page is it on?

Q: Can models from an
Allied Detachment
that have the ability to
repair Hull Points
or Immobilised/Weapon Destroyed results from
the Vehicle Damage Table use this ability on Allied vehicles? (p112)
A: No.

I'd like to get that clarified further,,, I can understand if a Tau player can't attach SM and use the techmarine to repair vehicles.. totally different ball of wax than he is used to....

But IG and SM??? That should be ok, fluff wise. I guess next time they write the rules maybe they'll ask my opinion.

As an aside, what do people think about Masters of the Forge as HQ in general? Fluff wise it would seem to be the only choice for an Iron Hands force..

But I have never seen anyone use, or even heard anyone talking about using a techmarone in an actual game.. are they a waste of points? Would seem to be extremely difficult to keep the techmarone in range to fix enough vehicles during a game unless nothing is moving.... boring!

They are useful for manning a Thunderfire cannon, and if the cannon blows up and the techmarine hops out he can soak up challenges or tie up deepstrikers in CC.

A regular bike squad can only take 2 grav guns. Command Squads can take 5 (4 if you're using an apothecary).

I don't know if I see any benefit to having your detachment be Iron Hands over say White Scars. Chapter Tactics don't apply across ally boundaries, and half that detachment is a scout or bike.

Well, given the FAQ that is true. I was thinking that having a techmarine led army would be cool if they could fix up the tanks for IG. That being a no go... it makes no difference I guess.

I do like the build above BTW. I think having 500 pt attachments of different marines sounds like a cool way to make a fluffy IG army more versatile.
