I want a very dark red. I've mixed a little bit of Liche Purple with Crimson, which is given a nice deep rich colour, however it's a little too purplely I want it more maroon if you get me. I don't want to add black or brown as this tends to dirty it rather than darken it.
Any other suggestions for making a really deep red?
I want to make my blood angels this kind of colour;

Army Painter's Dragon Red or Chaotic Red, possibly with a black wash?
EDIT: Here is an excellent representation of Dragon Red.

Nice, but I would like to go darker, plus, when I do death company, I don't want to do them black but 4 or 5 shades darker than their counterparts.

When I'm trying to color-match something like that image it can sometimes be helpful to use Reaper's Power Palette:
http://www.reapermini.com/PowerPalette
Upload the image, then click around to see what colors it suggests for the various areas of the image. Even if you don't want to use their paints you may end up with a better understanding of the colors that go into that image.

Red Glaze, in many layers over a pre shaded basecoat. from brown to white. Airbrush would help with the glazing tbh.

I was thinking of a basecoat of Game colour dark fleshtone and gory red.

try khorne red with some black mixed in.
scab red was good. too bad they dont make it anymore.
army painter has a new "chaotic red"... looks pretty boss, i need to pick some up and try it out myself.
dragon red is way too bright for what you want. I'm thinking dragon red = red gore. pure red = blood red.

Nice tool, but they are suggesting to mix black, I've never had a good results mixing black and red though. I'll will test it again.
I like the idea of using washes but I don't have all these specific colours, just the primary ones. however what do you think of;
Basic troops under-coated in grey, with my dark red; 90/10 of Crimson/Liche Purple and maybe a dash of black (although I might try gory/khorne red) then washed in something?!
Then for Death company, undercoat in black with one airbrushed coat in the same red then a quite a few more washes airbrushed until near black.

Try khorne red with a sepia wash. The heavier the wash the darker the red. Or build up the red in extremely thin layers over a dark or black base coat.

I used to do a red for my world eaters that was layered up from scab to blood red and then I would hit it with 2 - 4 heavy coats of red ink and then 2-3 coats of chestnut ink (both still sold by Coat d'Arms)... But those were back in the screw-top white cap inks in bolter shell hex bottles. The effect was nicely layered depth like your image there, but you'd probably just want to go with strait red In a bunch of layers.

I found that a basecoat of Hull Red (VMC) glazed/bleneded over with good ol' red gore and blood red give a nice - to me - red result..

Ok, I've primed in black, based in Khorne Red, Washed in Baal Red, did a second wash in 50/50 water Devlan Mud and a final wash in Baal red.
It's a nice dark red. But what would you suggest to highlight it with? Should I be going bright red or even orange. Or a red just a shade lighter than the base coat?
