Hi all,
Myself and my gaming partner Lawrie had our first battle on the board we have been working on recently. I have a separate thread to see the WIP of that (and my Bad Moon ork army I am also currently working on). Lawrie has just started this army, so there are some WIP pieces in the report.
Fielded in this battle report is:
Tau vs Sons of Medusa - 1500 points.
The Sons are using the iron hands codex rules, both armies are being listed from their current books. Hope you enjoy the report, neither of us are competitive players and we are still learning the rules to a certain extent. Some of our tactics are a bit dodgy too, but it's all good fun.
As always, comments are warmly welcomed.

Set-up and game type
We got Crusade with vanguard strike, Tau won the roll for sides and first turn. A roll of a 2 for objectives meant that there was only 3 objectives on the field. For the sake of fairness we randomly placed the third objective using 2D6 and a scatter dice.
Night fighting in place.
The pics show where the objectives were placed.
Sons of Medusa failed to steal the initiative.
Tau go first!!!!
Turn 1
Generally a very uneventful first turn, as you can see from one of the pictures the Tau army was left with very little to shoot at.
Tau:
I decided that I had a strong position where I was currently deployed so did very little movement in the first turn. Had good cover and a good position to fire at the marine army as he advanced, the little shooting I did make managed to kill 2 scouts which included the one holding the heavy bolter. (That'll teach him for putting it at he front of the squad).
The scouts passed their LD test and it went on to Sons turn 1.
Sons of Medusa:
Being very weary of the Tau firepower, Lawrie carefully moved his force forwards, trying to keep as much in cover as he could. The rhino housing his HQ popped smoke and he broke his tactical squad down in to combat squads. Stating he believed he would make better use of the instant kill ability of the missile launchers on my battle suits.
The only shooting was in the form of a very well placed shot from a missile launcher that knocked a hull point off of the Tau Hammerhead with the ion cannon, not even the night fighting rule preventing it.

Turn 2
Tau
Hoping for a more damaging turn than the first I started by activating the nova reactor on the Riptide, with a 5 it went off without a problem and with once again very little movement to be done it was quickly in to the Tau phase, sorry... I mean the shooting phase.
With the nova reactor increasing the ion accelerators power I placed a large blast over the HQ's transport, it scattered 4 inches but still just clipped it and hitting 2 of the tactical marines that were standing behind it. He weapon easily penetrated but unfortunately only managed a 'stunned' result. However it killed both marines behind.
My markerlights were still just out of range and as such the Hammerheads were hitting on normal BS. The railgun missed!! But the ion cannon hit the second rhino twice, but I rolled a double 1 for my penetration rolls!!
Jet pack moves brought the Battlesuits in to cover to end the turn.
Son's of Medusa
Both of Lawrie's reserves came in!! The Stormraven and the assault squad, not good news for the Tau.
The assault marines took the brave move of deep striking deep behind enemy lines and landed just behind the Skyshield Landing pad, they scattered to the side but were safe with no mishaps.
The Stormraven made its presence felt straight away with a move to the centre of the table where it opened up on the Riptide and the Ion cannon wielding Hammerhead, using it 'power of the machine spirit' it took 2 wounds off the Riptide and blasted the Ion cannon from the Hammerhead. Nasty!!
This turn definitely went in the favour of the Sons of Medusa.

Turn 3
Tau
I felt I needed to establish some dominance in this battle, so I moved some of my harder hitting units in to positions of better LOS. Risky as if my jump moves in the assault phase were not good I could find myself easily in harms way.
The Riptide again passed his nova check and I gave him a 3+ Inv save, as with the Stormraven nearby I was expecting the terminators to be dropped off the next turn. One of my Devilfish disembarked 10 fire warriors and the shooting then began.
I felt brave, or rash or stupid, not sure which looking back on it. So decided to fire my 10 markerlights at the Raven to 'light it up',eager to destroy it before it could inflict any more damage. I got 2 6's so pushed the BS of my Hammerhead to 3 for the snap shot, I rolled a 2 so missed the shot. A hit then could have been game changing....
Rest of the shooting was good though, I wanted to reduce the marines manoeuvrability so targeted the rhinos with the Battlesuits. Both rhinos were destroyed and the fire warriors rapid fired in to the assault marines, killing 3.
Sons of Medusa
The Raven slows to Hover mode and drops it's payload of Terminators in front of the Riptide, various shooting takes place, armour saves are made across the battle. Notable exception are a missile killing a battle suit from the Commanders unit, a pinpoint accurate shot from the assault squad sgts plasma exploding the Hammerhead with Railgun and the fact Lawrie forgot to fire the Stormraven!!! I think the thought of beating up my Riptide was all he could think about.....
In the assault phase the Riptide lost a wound against 5 thunder hammer terminators, that 3+ inv and feel no pain works a treat. He then fell back 8 inches away from the marines.

Turn 4
Tau
With 2 angry looking bright green assault marines looking at them the pathfinders used their carbines to finish off the squad, this unfortunately meant no markerlights this turn.
The Battlesuits managed to kill 3 of the terminators, their storm shields and the Iron Hands 6+ FNP saving many wounds. They soaked up a huge amount of fire power, but I saw them as a huge threat that needed dealing with.
The suits then repositioned using their jet packs and all LD tests were passed.
Sons of Medusa
Very little movement as the battle is now at close quarters, the Stormraven targets the Tau general who is now on his eon after both bodyguards were killed by missile fire in earlier rounds. The multi melta huts and wounds, but the Commander survives thanks to his inv save of 4+. The lascannon misses completely and the bolter rounds bounce off his armour. Lucky General!!!!
The 2 terminators charge the Riptide again, and they lose combat!!! The Riptide kills one and makes his inv save for the return attacks. The combat continues....

Turn 5
Tau
Not looking good for me at all, in my excitement of playing on the new board and just wanting to kill marines I completely ignored the objectives. And I suddenly realised how grave that mistake was, if I had any chance I need this battle to go to turn 6. My army had been gradually whittled down and my Riptide was locked in combat.
I sent a Devilfish towards the table edge hoping that a sixth turn may reward me with linebraker, the other Devilfish moved flat out towards the obj. But this all hinged on there being another turn... Not a good position.
The commander took a pot shot at the HQ to have it saved on the chapters 6+ FNP and the riptide suffered a wound from combat but passed the LD test that followed.
Sons of Medusa
Sensing victory, the marines pushed up aggressively, killing as they went. The Stormraven killed the commander with its lascannon (instant death) and combined fire power wipes out the remaining Battlesuits.
The Terminator and Riptide keep slugging away at each other but cause no wounds on either combatant.

End of Game
A roll of a 2 ends the game at turn 5.
Tau view point:
I felt I started well, held my ground effectively but in the end completely forgot about the mission we were playing. Could have easily pulled out a draw or win simply by keeping some fire warriors on my home objective.
However, I really enjoyed the game and the new space marine codex has made them a tough army to fight against.
Sons of Medusa view point:
Well, at the start I thought I was in trouble, my mobility was removed with the loss of the rhinos. But the Stormraven came in on turn 2 and it really won the day for me. With armour 12 all round and the amount of weaponry it has makes it a nightmare to fight against.

Cool battle report! Really enjoyed it!
I think as Tau I would have deployed the firewarriors earlier to create more firepower as the marines slogged it across the board.
Thanks for a great contribution!

Hi Drachen mate.I finally got myself on Dakka Dakka. This battle was a real pleasure to be a part of, our first game on the new board. Thanks for everyone's kind comments, Vourne I'm sure we will team up soon to fight the rising tide of green skins building up in Drachens hoard. Thanks to everyone for the comments it means a lot and we will be sure to upload future reports. My sons of medusa are a work in progress and I hope to start a blog for the project for anyone who would like to see the army grow. Automatically Appended Next Post:
Just on a slight foot note I feel I should add to my thoughts in a bit more in depth about the battle. I must say my army as a whole performed well,. Splitting the tact squads into combat squads is so useful, it allowed my two missile launchers to establish a great fire platform from the off as the Sargent's and special weapons moved forwards in the rhinos (well for the first turn at least)
Drachen had really punished me by disabling both transports. I managed to keep to cover in deployment but in Tau turn two There was just so much fire power my smoke launcher saves just had to much to do. Luckily my reserves both turned up fast, the assault squad done a great job in the tau back line I did have to sacrifice them to tie up Drachens marker lights. By this stage the battle was a real midfield firefight and the stormraven was in hover mode and with that many marker lights dotting it up it would have been blown to bits.
This brings me to the stormraven it's self. To be honest it was this one vehicle that won me the battle. It's firepower is immense it can shoot at more than one target due to its power of the Machine spirit. Which was used to good effect the turn it came in,. It dropped my terminators off who assaulted out of it and has armour twelve all round!!! At one point Drachen got his melta armed battle suits within half range. He was confident to cause damage due to the extra armour pen they would get. I then reminded him it had ceremite plating there for he would not get this bonus (the look on his face was priceless) the stormraven truly is an army on its own!
Having said this, the battle could have been a hard fought draw and who knows maybe a Tau win if Drachen had not taken his eye off the objective!! But game ended and the sons of medusa won back the imperial strong hold to request evacuation!
But the tau will be back! Will the sons of Medusa get back to orbit before the Tau return in a storm of vengeance? Keep in touch!

Hi Brymm thanks for your very kind words. The army is a work in progress at the moment but it's something I'm really enjoying. The colour scheme really drew me to the chapter. I will be creating a tread or blog in the coming weeks and I will be happy to keep you posted on the progress. Thanks again pleased you enjoyed the report, Drachen done a great job writing it.
