I have to say, I like the looks of the current cover better. Those new ones just look... odd. Just my opinion.
Plus, do we really need to spend money to design new covers with all the budget issues the US is having?

No, they stopped wearing lifts on their heads after flattops went out of fashion. Without a flat surface the lifts would just fall off.

I'm not really a fan of any of the hats shown, but the current one is certainly better in my book.

I like Boonie Hats first, then berets, then those furry Russian hats. I think only berets would really work for like... parades and stuff.

Man, the military really loves fashion, and style, and parades. More like the millinery, amirite? A yearly fashion review? I bet they sit around drinking cosmopolitans and looking at shoes for days.

I would have hated the beret a lot less had I seen any movies where the actors portraying soldiers knew how to shave/shape a beret and tuck the goddamned strings in. But I still would have hated it.

It might be helpful if people presented pictures of hats they think are girly enough.

Except in the military (army, marines, probably navy, but probably not the air force), there is no such thing as a hat.... it's a Cover.

And frankly, the military could save a whole lot more money if they cut down the size of the 1st Cav Division's unit patch, lol

For srs though, why the hell can I land my C-130 on the unit patch of a 1st Cav division soldier? That's gotta cause wind sheer.

Cover is a pretty common term, but my slices of the AF has a lot of interaction with the other branches, so that may be why.

Was he French? I'm not so certain, certainly had a French name and lineage, but he was from New Orleans, Louisiana, USA.

God, I hope I have more on my chest by the time I make corporal than that dumb boot.

The cover Dan Daly wore was likely made in China, where Marines had to use local tailors for a lot of their uniform items. All kinds of ridiculous things were considered uniform items for Marines in China, including the russian style "ushanka" fuzzy hat. This does not make it a viable option for a modern military cover though. The reasoning behind the prototype was apparently that the company that made female covers went out of business. They make the same cover with two different fabrics. Females are not given a frame to put cloth covers on, they're given two separate covers, which is a logistical nightmare.

I bought a high quality white cover after boot (one of the nice pre-assembled ones, whatever the hell the brand was) but then again, I ended up in my blues a whole bunch so that may have been a more solid investment for me then some people.

Also Fantastic, it's a peace time Marine Corps dude, be glad you got your grade soda stain to go with your pizza stain.

I still don't get the laughing comments...white kepi's aren't worn by general Frenchmen, technically not by Frenchmen at all (going by the unit's name, I think there may be some Frenchmen in it though, not 100%).

Why would being maori make a difference?
Anyway, the only French military action we're aware of is the sinking of a civilian ship (The Rainbow Warrior) back in the 1980s and it was in port at the time.

So because of the Maori's culture, white New Zealanders can't trash talk people? They have an awful lot of VC winners (amongst other awards) who beg to differ.

It is in fact trash talk Motyak, if you can't take, don't dish. Though considering the entire NZDF is roughly equivalent in size to just Legion Etrangere I doubt much can go either way.

I remember when I was a teenager and got invited to play in a Battletech campaign. I love that game and here was some guys who were running a really serious, heavy on the details merc campaign full of guys with actual military backgrounds. The first couple of sessions were a blast, as we played out a contract and I learned a load of stuff about tactics and strategy.

Then in session three, after the contract was over we had a reception with our employer, and suddenly these guys were all describing their uniforms in minute detail. Blokes who would look at you with contempt if you said you knew the difference between jeans and jeggings were suddenly detailing the length and style of their dress jackets, and then roleplaying a whole session of social formalities and small talk that young girls playing tea party was bit much.

Don't get me wrong, the whole game was a total blast and I was devestated when, as with all great campaigns, the GM got a girlfriend and it petered out, but I never got my head around the fascination with military uniforms and formalities.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

I really do not care about the fashion sense for our men and women in the service. Instead of having foolish meetings about how we should change the dress blues or class a's of our service members, why not take that money and get our men and women some friggin body armour and armour plating for light duty vehicles? Is that too much to ask ouridiots in DC to do? Rant over.

On a side note .... so that you guys can understand that I am actually a guy that likes to laugh ... you are aware that MARINE is actually an acronym.

Spoiler:

I love telling marines that after they ask me how my tour was in the Chair Force!

Now, we like big books. (And we cannot lie. You other readers can’t deny, a book flops open with an itty-bitty font, and a map that’s in your face, you get—sorry! Sorry!)
