So we have a situation here where a chapter master by himself assalts a swarmlord (also by himself) and the chapter master (black templar) issues a challenge.

Can you challenge when it's already a 1 on 1 fight? what are the relevant pages if not.

What does it matter?
Yes, there's nothing requiring there to be multiple models in either unit.

There's no reason you couldn't, although it really doesn't make a lot of difference.

About the only situation I can think of where it matters, is if another character charges in on a subsequent turn.
They would then have to take a heroic intervention check if they wanted to trade places.

EDIT: Oh, forgot there is also that warlord trait where you get victory points for killing guys in a challenge. That too.

On a sidenote to that warlord trait marines have, its crazy good for psychological warfare. Tell your opponent about it right before you challenge him and he'll duck out more then likely, losing his Ld, and attacks. Repeat process until his warlord is the only one left and cannot deny the challenge, proceed to gain D3 extra VPs.

Rick Priestley said it best:
Bryan always said that if the studio ever had to mix with the manufacturing and sales part of the business it would destroy the studio. And I have to say – he wasn’t wrong there! The modern studio isn’t a studio in the same way; it isn’t a collection of artists and creatives sharing ideas and driving each other on. It’s become the promotions department of a toy company – things move on!

Also a couple of Eldar Exarch abilities only work in challenges.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

It matters if next turn the opponent has a unit that could charge into the fight and you think the enemy character will still be alive. They must accept the challenge and the enemy unit will not get to charge or strike blows(depending how you play charging characters in a challenge).

And its a Black Templar, so gets re-rolls to hit and rending in challenges. Thats why it matters.

Chaos space marine characters have to challenge (except daemon prince), so there's another situation.

They key word there being have as they don't even get a choice in the matter.

8th made it so I can no longer sway Tau onto the side of Chaos, but they will eventually turn aside from their idea of the Greater Good to embrace the Greatest of pleasures.

Also remember that if its 1 vs. 1, then they must accept the challenge. Seems like a small issue, but its worth noting.

Its actually a good idea to issue a challenge in this situation. They can't refuse and it will protect you from other units that may get involved at a later time, assuming the challenge is still ongoing.
