Im thinking of starting a choas space marine army just wondering if models I like are any good game wise.

The models I like:
Defiller
forgefiend/maulerfiend
Hell drake ( from reading this is choas's best unit?)

Defiler- No. It is intended as a jack-of-all-trades vehicle capable of ordnance, fire support or melee ability. Unfortunately thanks to the Ordnance rules, it is forced to choose between which weapons it wants to fire. It is also intended to assault with AV12 which makes it prime grenade bait. It therefore ends up mediocre in all things without the ability to multitask and is painfully fragile in the process. The price tag is the deathblow to a mediocre machine.

Forgefiend- Alright. Expensive and fragile, but decent damage output. It doesn't particularly excel at it's job but you can do worse. Definitely look into some allied Daemons to support it.

Maulerfiend- Yes, in numbers. They don't work on their own but when fielded in 2's, 3's or even 4's (Legion) they really come into their own. Go big or go home here, it really depends how far you are willing to go with them.

Heldrake- One of the most powerful models in the game. Murderously efficient at removing infantry and exceptionally reliable, all on a silly-tough platform. Excellent, excellent unit. Don't take more than 2 if you want to keep your friends.

When starting out. It is best to go for a couple of troop choices and a dedicated transport. I would advice go for a unit or two of CSM and a Chaos Rhino. CSM are one of the best troop choices in the game because they can be upgraded to whatever you want. After that, get some Elites choices. I personally have Terminators. Then a HQ choice, and eventually Fast Attack / Heavy Support. I really like the Defiler just like you. Good luck starting out!

Then who needs 'em anyway?

Defilers, if taken at all over two Maulerfiends, should be taken in pairs.

Forgefiends should be accompanied by a Warp Smith and their weapon loadout depends upon your local opponents. Ectoplasma Cannons vs. Deathwing, for example.

If you are collecting CSM to win, then I'd suggest taking lots of Cultists and Heldrakes and possibly Necrons as allies so you have access to their fliers as well.

Although I think that the best way to collect Chaos is to create a fluffy army, it is so much more rewarding and badass having a themed army with a deep and meaningful backstory behind it.

Defiller = NO, NO, NO
forgefiend/maulerfiend = Forge if you allies w/ Tzeench Herald for presiance, Mauler x2 or 3
Hell drake ( from reading this is choas's best unit?) = Taking more than 1 is a "Richard Cranium" Move, but if you do, 2 x Drake + 5xSpawn w/MoN.
