Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

I assumed it was the one you got to keep after an introductory painting lesson? That's what got me a free tactical Marine, anyway. And a free Sergeant Marine in addition to that when I went in for a different painting lesson, actually.

In theory your supposed to get a freebie your first trip into a GW store, if you haven't gotten one just politely ask about it.

In the back of some black library books the last page before the back cover is a flier to the effect of "Liked the book? Play the game!" and it comes with a coupon for a free miniature.
And no, I haven't done it. On the one hand, I don't own any BL books, and am unwilling to deface ones from the library, and on the other hand, I have nowhere even remotely nearby to redeem it.

No, there are GWs in the US. Just depends where you are on how far you need to go.

It was also in the old WDs telling people to come in and ask for their free mini.

My GW manager randomly gave me a marine after I mentioned I'd be testing paint schemes.
Edit: My gf has since claimed the marine and he is now 50 shades of purple.

Back when I first started, probably 9 or 10 years ago now there was a fairly popular GW in the mall and the manager gave me a metal SM attack bike that was sprayed ultramarines blue and told me to paint it and come back next week and we would see what we could do to improve it.
I had just started DA and had to paint that fether black with no spray paint!

Don't feel bad, in 2004 I also was trying to paint a DA army (a successor chapter actually) in black (bone shoulderpad trim though) so I know your pain.
I've still got those few models kicking about and gods are they awful. Plus the Vidicator fell apart. Joys of metal/plastic kits.

Doh. I plead over 24 hours without sleep as my defense. (Teething baby.) My bad! Still, while technically out of the country, sixty miles isn't so terrible. I don't know what the highways are like, but that's what, a couple of hours at the most? If one of those is a Battle Bunker, then that might even be worth it. (To go to, I mean, not to go to for the sole sake of the free mini! )

I must be mistaken. For a moment there I thought "free" and "Games Workshop" were used in the same sentence, outside of "Free shipping if you're already forking over a large pile of money anyway."
On a more serious note, I'll remember that if I ever go to a proper GW store.

There's no coupon. It just says to come into a GW store for a free painting lesson and a free model. It's always just a starter set Marine, nothing special.

A guy I did the painting lesson with got a WFB Goblin. At least at the GW store I go, they have containers full of minis that they let you pick from.

You mean you're not willing to drive 3 hours north or south for $3.50 of molded plastic?

What people do is round up a bunch of friends who don't play 40K/marines and then they all give their marine to the marine player and he gets a free combat/full squad.

They sometimes give out free figs for other stuff.
While we were sat in the cinema waiting for the Hobbit to start last year, cinema staff came along the aisles handing out small bags. Lots of people grabbed them, then dumped them under the seats.
In the bags were a folded leaflet to visit the local GW for them to help paint the figure in the bag.
At the bottom was a Bilbo figure. In the dark cinema, squashed into a little fold-up seat, the model looked tiny.
No wonder there were lots of bags left after the film finished....

I got a dwarf miner for my first painting experience. I sadly don't have it any more.. :(
Tempted to buy a Battle for Skull Pass set just to paint those Dwarves.. I doubt I could find one new now though.
