I love em, and am going to start using maybe 2 maxed out squads, I watched 12 sniper kroot take 5 wounds off of a Great Unclean One in 1 turn.

Whats the consensus?

If the question is with regards to how good they are or if you should take them, I believe that the consensus is an emphatic "yes".

They are cheap enough for the firepower you get that they make an excellent scoring unit for Tau. Its also nice to use them as the single required troop if you are allying a Tau force into your army.

Sniper kroot are purely a preference thing. Theyre strong because thats a lot of snipers for dirt cheap (its what 140-160pts for 20?). People usually hate them because they are squishy and snipers are heavy so they cant move and shoot reliably.

Only reason i dont use them is because i simply dont have enough to bother bringing rofl. I usually play the "ima table you" tactic rather than objective anyway.

I picked up a 2nd box and am thinking of running 2 squads of 15, would be 180pts, yes they are squishy but using them as your allied troops makes the opponent have to make a decision on whether to focus on crisis suits or digging the Kroot out of cover, if you get them in some trees or any cover for that matter it increases their survivability.

Kroot are the epitome of YMMW units, they are gods in the eyes of some, and garbage in the eyes of others.

If they fit your style, get some.

can neither confirm nor deny I lost track of what I've got right now.

Just a quick thought I've had: the fact that they can't move and fire isn't as bad for Kroot as it is for other units, since every hit they get when firing Snap-Shots is a guaranteed Precision Hit, so you can still aim for Sergeants, Heavy Weapons, etc. It's not a game-breaking idea but it's a bit of a boost they get. I don't play Tau but personally I'd consider a squad of them for taking down bigger beasties.

Unfortunately you cannot precision shot using snapshots. However, Markerlights can go a long way in making Sniper Kroot more mobile.

I always thought 30 infiltrating/outflanking sniper Kroot was the best way to run them but apparently reserved non-snipers and hounds outflanking are doing better.

Actually i never noticed that. But youre right, the mini-paragraph under precision shots says snaps and blasts or anything that doesnt roll to hit cannot precision shot.
Thats useful to make note of.

Most of my Tau lists run 2 mobs of 20 kroot with sniper rounds and a single hound. This give the unit a large amount of versatility. Against lists with MC's, I deploy them in my firebase as area denial (smart opponents will think twice before moving in range of 20 sniper shots, stupid opponents will be punished). Against lists with vulnerable backfield elements or light infantry I can outflank to either damage unprepared units or pin down units that my opponent would be using to engage my firebase

Kroot are a rather versatile unit that is rather effective at taking objectives for the tau.
