I'm thinking of getting the game but I don't really know much about it other than it's a zombie apocalypse RPG. Is it any good? Is there anything other than the rulebook I need to play?

It has been years, but from what I remember you just need the book.

It's a pretty good game. Here's an interesting recap:

It's not a terrible system, but is a little overwrought IMHO for something that should be fast and loose.

It's been the go-to zombie RPG for a long while now. The system is a base d10+skill vs 9, with levels of success if you go over. The system does a good job of not being obtrusive and just becoming background after you get used to it.
The core book is all you need and gives you the rules to design different types of zombies. There is not a single specific setting, instead a few different deadworlds are given as options.
Most of the other books and supplements just provide more options and genre specific rules. If you want a long term campaign, pick up One of the Living, as it helps out in that area.

So instead of a monster manual, you basically create your own zombies and setting?

There are 11 dead worlds presented, along with the zombies for each of them. Plus the zombie creation rules if you want to build your own. This is all in the core.
You can pick up Atlas of the Walking Dead for another 17 undead from around the world. Each one has a good deal of information along with some plots and adventures for that type.
All Flesh is part of classic Unisystem, so you can grab any of the classic Unisystem books and combine them without effort. So All Flesh, Conspiracy X, Terra Primate, and Witchcraft are all compatible. With a little effort, you can pick up the cinematic books and mix them together. That gives you Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Army of Darkness, and Ghosts of Albion to add in eventually as well.
I know this sounds like a big push for the supplements, but you could play forever with only the core.

Sounds like it's pretty open for creativity. Maybe it really is worth getting. Thanks!

I play D&D 4e (sort of) and trust me, that thing has a LOT of supplements.
