Subject: Fortress of Redemption: trollin' or legitimate choice?

I've had the idea of throwing a FoR into my Space Marine army, and I was wondering if that would be bad (as in "wow, way to be that guy") or not. Especially with Krakstorm missiles, the Fortification comes out to the cost of a Land Raider, but with better weapons. It supports my White Scars/Iron Hands bike list rather well, though the TFG part may not be the FoR itself, but the Thunderfire Cannon and Hunter tank I put on and behind it, respectively.
Has anyone played with or against a Fortress of Redemption? Was it a huge boon to your army or a pain to kill?

Facing it as my three armies, Mechdar, Tyranids, and Foot GKs a fortress generally meant free cover and easier manipulation of board control. Automatically Appended Next Post: I've never suffered noticeable losses from shooting from the Fortress itself.

In MPO If you paid for the official Model, I have absolutely no issue with bringing a FoR.
We actually House-rule the Fortifications to function the same as they do in Planetstrike(for no additional cost); which makes all the fortifications better.
Sangheili: There is entire sections of the rulebook that detail how buildings work, How Fortifrications work, and exactly what the Fortress of redemption does.
|
This is my Rulebook. There are many Like it, but this one is mine. Without me, my rulebook is useless. Without my rulebook, I am useless.
Stop looking for buzz words and start reading the whole sentences.

I've played with one before. It was no big deal. Didn't really accomplish much. Telion in the missile silo was a pretty sweet idea, but never really amounted to anything. Not saying it couldn't work, just that I couldn't make it work in the two games I've played with it. Since I won mine in a competitive event, I don't really have the burning need to use it that I think spending that amount of money would impart.

I have used my FOR on occasion.
A fully kitted FOR is more expensive than a LR, but provides decent protection. You can't get all that many people on the barricades though, and Heldrakes and other flamer weapons love it if you do pack em in, because they will be conveniently lined up for one shot to kill the whole unit.
It does pretty much define your strategy, though. If you are rocking a FOR you are pretty much going defensive. If you run offensively, you leave the fortress exposed. A round or so later you are taking incoming up the rear from yuor own fortress when the enemy pods in and takes it from you.
It only takes a couple of lucky hits to render a FOR a huge block of useless. I have lost the two worthwhile guns to one squad of Long Fangs, on turn one, due to split fire.
It really isn't as tough as people always make it out to be. Melta/lascannons/lances mulch it quite quickly.
It has got a huge troop capacity, but precious few fire points. The only firepoints are on the walkway building (guess where your opponent is going to park some terrain..).
The Krakstorm is ok, but spendy. It also can only fire indirect unless the target is right over the silo (shot a trygon this way once ) so it's not overly prone to hitting. The lascannon is good, but still only one lascannon shot. You need to commit models to the bunkers to have them fire.
It is also an absolute bear to transport (breaks easy), takes a ton of room, and then you have people who have never faced one but read the forums look at you like you just killed and ate their puppy for putting one on a table...then everyone argues about it's rules if you can get it on the field
It IS an imposing and badass model, which is why i have one for my Orks. Mine will be thoroughly orked up at some point... Automatically Appended Next Post: Not sure you can put a TFC on the fortress. You might be able to but i'm away from my rulebook again.. I think the battlements are infantry-only, but i'd be happy to be wrong

The fortress is great from my experience using it. I always like parking Noise Marines inside it.
Pretty much anyone can make use of it, even CC heavy lists.
I ran Khorne Berserkers inside LRs for a long time (Good ol' lore days) And found that parking some cultists behind it, in it and even on top of it in most cases left my opponent rather annoyed because he HAD to focus on my LR's which sadly most of my opponents never really come prepared to deal with en mass.
Its also got some sweet weaponry. Having 30 cultists where you have 3 heavy stubbers and 3 random dudes manning heavy bolters is always nice in making excellent use of the sometimes rather steep cost of the Fortress itself.

I'm actually using it with my cc bike list for a combo anti air and anti infantry platform. It's three AV14 buildings that have weapons on them that deal significant damage. At the same time, I have khan and two chapter masters coming at you like spider monkeys

Plus you can throw a legion of the dammned dude in the Krakstorm wing and have a plasma cannon, plasma gun, and Krakstorm coming down on some poor SOB every turn without cover. Kinda wastes their 3++ though. Not sure if you can put the icarus in the same wing, or if you would want to. The other dudemansghosts could just grab a heavy bolter I guess. Also I thought the Krakstorm could direct fire based on the LOS of the firing model

Nonsense. The Battle Company box is perfect for filling out your ranks of aspect warriors with a large contingent from the Screaming Baldies shrine.

Fraid not.
The weapons are emplaced weapons, not gun emplacements, so are controlled from inside the building and draw LOS from the weapon barrel.

While true, it's basically an ignores cover battle cannon that scatters more. Still good.

The fortress is nice and all, but not all that bad.
Still highly vulnerable to long-range AT guns, and can't really answer them in return.
