We have our share of MOBA fans here so a little surprised we don't have a thread on this just yet. Previously developed under the name Blizzard All-Stars, Heroes of the Storm is the anticipated Blizzard MOBA using official Blizzard characters;

I actually find the trailer a little corny myself

Anyone interested? Any thoughts?

Assuming Nova's ultimate is really a nuke I find that kind of BA especially if it comes with the 'nuclear launch detected' announcement. Jim Reynor vs Diablo though is a total wtf isn't there a better match up than this?

But of course that's just the trailer. Kind of curious what other characters will appear. I expect most of them will be from Warcraft as Starcraft and Diablo are a little light on useful characters for the game.

Don't you have google?

Also, it's no longer going to be a MOBA nor aimed at any competitive scene, it has A LOT of maps built around certain gimmicks, like awakening dragons.

You can still do that.

It's still going to have teams fighting each other, it's just not going to be in the standard moba format (perhaps one map will be?) But they have pretty much thrown the idea of doing another Dota clone out of the window.

Here, have a free interview:

Oh now I get yah. I'd actually consider that not a bad idea. Between LoL and DOTA and Smite there isn't really much room left in the genre I suppose. Carving their own little niche will probably get them farther.

Game actually looks alrite, i don't really enjoy any blizzard IPs, or enjoy Dota-games much, so will not be trying it.

Gotta say one thing really annoys me, it pits futuristic technology and magic against each other. Magic and advanced technology should never exist in the same universe imo because they're both polar opposites and two sides of the same coin.

Nice to see a trailer without boring orchestra music, even if they did exchange it for genero-metal.

EDIT: Did Nova ever actually appear in a game? As someone who was really looking forward to Starcraft: Ghost, (you should look up what the multiplayer was like and also the very nearly finished story mode) it's a bit of a galling to see that character exploited for marketing.

She appeared in Starcraft II and some EU material. No idea if she ever actually showed up in the original games.

Surely you must be joking!

Especially because SC:G never kicked off it is nice to at least see her here.

"Exploited for marketing" really sounds like something you could attribute to anything that gets a sequel, a book, a movie or a game just because it builds upon existing material. Certainly they're aiming to make money with this game (welcome to capitalism?), but to completely dismiss the aspect of the character's mere appearance for those who like her?

So far I've avoided this sub-genre, but I guess I'm gonna give this a try. With Nova, ofc.

On the one hand though Lynata, isn't she a little out of character in the trailer? I'm not super up to speed on SC mind you but Nove never struck me as being so cocky like she is in the trailer (but of course advertising). It was one of the things that struck me as really corny.

Oh, I dunno - judging from the face she made in the opening cinematic of her game.

It's probably "dialed up" a bit to make her appear more fun, though I wouldn't go as far as saying it is out of character. She was described to have become snarky and arrogant as a result of her memory wipe, which could probably emerge as a sort of "lethally playful" attitude where she would taunt her victims before killing them.

Her appearance in SC2

I read most of that book on nova. I kind of don't like nova personally. She's there to be like Kerrigan before infestation but then Kerrigan came back and got turned again. For some odd reason I preferred tosh but perhaps that's because he's a spectre and seemed cool to me. I me we never really touched up on spectres or had them as actual units you can make. To my knowledge only a couple ghosts can use psychic powers and need spectre treatment to even have psychic powers. I just feel it's a missed opportunity and was expecting to see them in HotS and was disappointed they were left out. In fact all that happened was tosh's existence was mentioned twice to my knowledge (still didn't play the last level but I don't think he'll come up).

So back to the book I feel she was overly emotional for some reason. I can understand but a lot of people went through worse as daily life and yet we had to listen to how bad she felt. Not only that but she accepted the mind erasing treatment which to me feels a bit weak. I mean perhaps having her memories erased would come back to bite her in the *ss and i'm sure it will. A little hard to learn a lesson if you decide to erase all your previous knowledge and allow yourself to be a puppet of your owner. Pretty sure the memory wipe was pretty standard for a lot of marines though and supposedly many if not all were convicts or at least before mind-erasing. Perhaps i'm remembering it wrong though.

Anyway nova is mostly what Kerrigan was. I really hope there's no stupid love triangle possibility with nova as a third wheel between jim raynor and Kerrigan.

While we're at it I kind of wish infested Kerrigan got a bullet between her eyes but then she was made super important to the plot. I just don't want things being too romantic. It's ok but in starcraft 1 I don't remember there really being too many feelings between the two. I felt it was mostly raynor liking her esp. after the infestation with Kerrigan not reciprocating or at least not that much. Of course maybe I remembered things wrong. I honestly felt bad for jim because I wanted him to just move on and let the past just be. I mean how many people have broken up with other people over smaller things? I dunno seeing Kerrigan manipulate and hurt her previous friends was just horrible to watch. It made me hate her all the more. At least in heart of the swarm she's not as bad but then she goes on with revenge to kill mengsk and kills millions in the crossfire.

------------------

Anyway getting on topic I never really played LoL and i'm guessing this is mostly a blizzard version of that. It could be fun but if I play anything I'll probably stay out of the warcraft universe. Unless I can play that Lich King guy. That just sounds awesome.

I'm actually not too well versed on SC lore, including Nova, although I've read some of it. I really just like her for her style, and I guess precisely because her game got canned. She just seems like a cool heroine that never really got her chance, so to say.
I do recall that Nova originally came from a privileged family, then all sorts of crap happened, everybody died and she found herself at the mercy of some street gang. That's gotta leave a lot of psychological scarring - precisely because she once lived so high, the fall was all the harder, essentially leaving her entirely unprepared to face such an existence. I can imagine that under such circumstances, a mindwipe might seem like an easy way out. It's better than suicide, at any rate, and we certainly see enough of those happening in our real world for similar reasons.

I think the brainwashed Marines were forcibly conscripted, though? As in they didn't have any say in it. Maybe they also use it to different degrees, with Ghost operatives being purged more extensively than some rank-and-file grunt.

Yeah, I think Nova just works best alone. There's too much romance creeping into fiction and games these days, so it feels kind of bland and overdone. Although I do recognise that it fits for Raynor. He's kind of like a hopeless case, and I feel this makes him more human for it. And Kerrigan manipulating him ... well, that kind of fits, too. She has changed, yet she recalls enough of her former self to be consumed by her hatred against those who betrayed her - which is why Kerrigan's kill streak also fits. It's kind of her big hour. Payback time.

flamingkillamajig wrote:Anyway getting on topic I never really played LoL and i'm guessing this is mostly a blizzard version of that.
Judging from the video Soladrin posted, it'll be more varied. As if every single map would be its own game style? It sounds intrigueing.

I'm guessing they're doing all the most recent games. This could mean diablo 2 characters are out such as the necromancer. I think i'd enjoy the demon hunter more though as that was a pretty fun class. Female demon hunter was pretty cool. I remember a friend saying demon hunters were 100% bad*ss all the time. I suppose the witch doctor will take the place for necro summoning.

Honestly I didn't mind Nova too much in ghost and feel bad for that game's cancellation. It had a lot of potential and is basically indefinitely on hold.

Not sure who we could have for female characters I like. Perhaps a non-possessed Leah from diablo 3? Maybe in 'reaper of souls' she comes back to life. I feel like they're hinting at it tremendously even at the game's end. I mean a human girl with diablo as her father? That's set up for all kind of *ss-kicking.

Of course they won't do something like that or at least not for a while and only if she makes a major return.

I wouldn't mind tassadar. I just hope we can use the ethereal tassadar from Wings of Liberty. Personally as far as cunning goes he was my favorite good guy in starcraft. Sadly he seemed to be the only smart good guy in that series (dunno if you can count stukov). I think zeratul is taking his place though. Kind of funny how tassadar basically became a god or possibly a blue jedi hologram ghost.

Perhaps i'm unfair with female characters but to be honest at least in video games I don't see many positive female characters which don't come off extremely harshly. I mean raynor is kind of hard but he is a 'white knight'. I don't see too many bad*ss female characters which don't look like they'll rip your face off and eat it if you look at them wrong. Perhaps regular Kerrigan was one before she was infested but not anymore really. I dunno I guess either they're a bad*ss b*tch or a weak damsel in distress. Perhaps lara croft's latest game found the perfect female hero balance. Samus from Metroid is probably a good one too.

---------------

If I could play as any character from any of blizzard's titles it would either be a necromancer, tyrael or tosh.

In fact I think tosh is my favorite though the necromancer would be fun.

I could imagine us doing the whole tosh vs nova throwdown at some point. I'm guessing nova is more of a DPS character whereas tosh is more of a caster. Nova has mind control but she's still mostly a ghost. Tosh on the other hand from what I remember was a tank and a caster. In fact I could imagine him being quite an insane caster.

--------------

Btw why does your IP location say the U.S.? I thought it switched between france, Ireland and the UK only. Unless you came to visit the U.S. or your IP went super crazy again.

Don't be too sure about that! They said they're tapping their entire history of games - Tyrande is (fortunately) the amazone'ish WC3 version rather than the gown-wearing WoW one, for example, and supposedly, they're thinking about putting the Lost Vikings in. And then there are rumours about Blackthorne as well. The latter could explain why they've recently made that game available for free, perhaps?

We'll see. But if this character gallery in the background on the game's official website is any indication ...

That's probably because most of the time, female characters are "extras" rather than the main protagonist, and there is a tendency (regardless of whether they're male or female) to limit the type of extras to a few proven archetypes in an attempt to appeal to the gamer. Most character development and history is reserved for the main character, and since the majority of those is male, female characters may miss this "counterweight" to balance their general appearance.

There's a couple good games, however. Aside from the ones you mentioned, Remember Me springs to mind. Dragon Age and Mass Effect also have very well written characters. Of course BioWare has adopted a tradition of making almost anyone romanceable as a feature, but then again at least this treatment is provided equally to both sexes.

Heh. Well, they've introduced Nova as an "Assassin", one of the four types of characters in this new game. Basically, that seems to be another name for rogue = high damage output, little survivability. She can cloak, and she is very deadly with her sniper rifle. Supposedly she can also call in nukes if leveled high enough, just like in the cinematic.
What's cool is that whilst her bullets do loads of damage, they can be intercepted. So if she's firing at the enemy team and one of them is about to die, another player can jump between her and her target and catch the bullet. Neat idea.

Considering I liked both Nova as a character, as well as the Sniper class in TOR, I think I might enjoy playing her in this game.

You'd better watch what you say lynata lol. The U.S. government gets very touchy about certain things esp. to foreigners even from first world countries these days. Haha. Did you get that joke from me? I remember saying something fairly similar once.

Well you are a fan of cyberpunk so that whole hacker type personality would totally seem cool to you at least. I think it's funny with a lot of people though. A picture of a warhammer nerd as one of the CIA's most wanted. Not just you but quite a few people here. For instance imagining a skinny white guy like myself on the poster would seem odd.

I think it's true that bioware though very good story writers have done the weird expressionless face often on their characters.

Speaking of 'Remember Me' I totally have to get that game. I still would like to get Xcom: Enemy Within first and then probably 'company of heroes 2' and then there's possible chance of getting more models. However I do plan on getting quite a few games. There's just always something added to the list and sadly I can only buy 25% of the things that make my 'to buy' list or at least with video games. Warhammer is just too expensive and I may have been priced out just about.

------------

Anyway back on topic I think tosh would be a good character. I think if nothing else spectres in general need more fleshing out or at least they should end up I the game. I'm hoping they'll make it into 'legacy of the void' but if that doesn't happen I may have to wait till starcraft 3 or something. Ugh we'll never get spectres. I think I might cry. We sort of have them in WoL but they should be a multiplayer unit. It'd totally add depth to the game I think.

With diablo there are several characters i'd like. The demon hunter is a good choice regardless of gender as is Baal. I might enjoy playing as baal though the tentacle thing would just make the Korean love of blizzard more creepy.

I'm not sure what else they'd have for starcraft. They have nova, jim raynor, tychus (I think), tassadar and a couple others. I'm guessing zeratul is an obvious choice. Phoenix (fenix?) is dead (twice in fact) so i'm guessing that's a no but then it shows tassadar in his normal body so who knows. Personally i'd like to see duran/narud. Also whatever the dark voice will be could be cool. Perhaps some primal zerg are possible. General Duke would be a weird one to have as he's a pilot. Heh you couldn't exactly have the overmind or a cerebrate as characters. Infested stukov is highly likely. Is the Odin a possibility for a special or perhaps the giant floating leviathan zerg?

Those are pretty much the only characters I can think of. I haven't played warcraft really so I wouldn't know about those possibilities. The necromancer would be fun though as would the druid. I dunno if the demon hunter and assassin would be too similar though to have both.

I kind of "meh"'d at it, but I've never been a huge Blizzard fan. Maybe if the Diablo 2 Necromancer is in it, I'd care-- I liked his personality as well as his take on necromancy.

You know what'd be awesome? They add general warfield with cannon arm. Yeah that'd rock and it's totally possible. He never had a model in the game before he died but considering the minigun arm I think it's possible.

Pretty sure every Diablo class ever will be in it since they are even adding female versions of the D3 classes too. Hell, they will even add someone from Rock N' Roll racing. Lost vikings will obviously be in there too.

Technically, they are adding in male versions. At least with Sonya, the female is the default, whereas the male barb is an alternate skin.

May seem unimportant to many, but it's kind of making a point, considering certain controversial topics in the gaming industry.
