I know you roll for the nova reactor at the start of the movement phase but do you have to select which option at that time or can you choose as needed after you pass the test?

It looks like you declare,roll (and pass hopefully), then choose which ability you want.

At the start of your movement, you look at the field and decide the best action for the next game turn.

Alright that makes more sense lol for a minute there I thought you had to decide when you rolled. (E.g. roll in movement and declare you're using the 4d6 movement as opposed to rolling and then deciding in the assault phase to use that cause you didn't need the shooting options)

No you had it right the second time, immediately after you succeed your Nova roll, you choose the special rule you will be using for the next game turn.
