Boom! Leman Russ Commander

This game has interested me for a while. I remember seeing the prices on the models and saying "phhhhhtttt"
Are there any companies based in the U.S. that make models that are actually cheap?
Has anyone tried to play using "counters"? If you have, where would I be able to download counters that look decent for printing off onto cardstock?

I havent seen or heard of anything for awhile. Ebay is your best bet for picking up models if thats what youre asking.

The game was originally rolled out by GW in WD, along with some top-down silhouettes of ships to use until the actual models came out.

Google searching turns up some sheets of 'fleet' silhouettes for most of the races that you could cut out and use. They'd work just as well as the models since the models and flights stands are purely aesthetic.

Unfortunately, actual ship models that are close to GWs in terms of styling are few and far between.

There is Firestorm armada and a few other BFG like games out there which are controlled by companies other then GW, thou I don't know there cost. Space fleet (another GW space game that predates BFG) is also out there and can be used to supplement your fleet.

As for counters, it depends. If you are talking about for ships, the silhouettes (mentioned above) are probably your best bet, thou I have no clue where you would find them. You could just use the ship images from the fleet lists and tape them to a flying stand if you are not able to find the silhouettes.

A quick question, do you measure distances from the model, the base, or the stick holding up the ship?

Been looking at making my own Ork ships so it's important. Would be great if I could toss size requirements out the window and go with what looks best

From memory, all measuring is done from the flight base stick. With some things affecting the base.

Aw yea, it'd have been nice to recycle unused jetbike bases but I can live with that.

You can use jetbike bases. They're the same, small for most ships and large for battleships.

Not only that, but Eldar and Dark Eldar ships have a suspicious resemblance to their Jet Bikes.

Ebay will gouge you for BFG models.
I'm looking to get Firestorm Armada models. I currently have a SM and a DE fleet.
(the ones that weren't in the house when it burnt down fire years ago. Oh, i do miss that chaos fleet. ) I'm deciding which models would work as a Red Corsairs Fleet.

You can build very good fleets for Orks, Dark Eldar and especially Tyranids using bitz from the 40k sets.

Its the only way to build some of their ships too.

Tyranids especially required intensive scratch building to get many of their ships.

Just curious, what others are there besides firestorm armada as a replacement game for BFG? I have been looking for a supported game to replace it where I could go and find opponents. X-wing was a nice replacement for Aeronautica.

Mongoose has ACTA. The only other one with a current following im aware of is Full Thrust. Of course there are several older ones around if you can find models/rules/players. Firestorm is the biggest name right now but you mentioned that so Im guessing it doesnt interest you? FA 2.0 is going to be hitting shelves in early December and it adds a good bit more depth to the game but still keeps it beer and pretzels friendly.

I don't make the rules, I just think them up and write them down.

Since my post I went looking around and I actually read a chunk of the firestorm armada rulebook. I am thinking I'm going to get into that one. It has a decent amount of similarity to bfg and I like the dindrenzi fleet models.

Edit: I did see it was coming out with a second edition next month and I am planning to hold off on purchases until then. I do have a question for those who know spartan games, I know the current rulebook is free online and I was wondering if that was purely because second ed is coming or if this is their standard operating procedure like how mantic has all their rulesets for free.

The current rule book for Firestorm has been a free pdf for sometime now so the assumption is that after a reasonable amount of time for sales the 2.0 rule book will go online too. The ship stats will be available online within the next couple weeks from what they've been saying so probably around the december 4 rulebook release date. They will also be releasing "fleet books" for the tree killers these have the current stats fluff and stuff for that race so basically a codex.

If youre into jumping in feet first they may still have some of the rulebook+ free battlestation preorders available too (shameless plug).

I don't make the rules, I just think them up and write them down.

Not quite feet first. I do plan on getting the starter set. I got some deals on 2 of the fury cruisers and one of the conqueror battleships. I wanted some of the old models based on looks and I figured even though they're old models, I can use them as maybe veterans that have been out of campaign for a long long time and haven't been retrofitted yet. I thought it was a cool idea atleast...

Take a look here

http://www.star-ranger.com/Minis.htm

Has a pretty good list of all of the miniatures lines (game related and not). There are some good ones there and a lot of variety aesthetically.

Brigade, Z4, and Cold Navy in particular are nice

I was working on some Ork stuff for it as well, but it has been delayed for now (models would be too expensive). However, I am planning on doing some smaller Imperial escorts and separate Ork turrets as well. Expect those in the coming weeks (the turrets at least).
