Archmagos Veneratus Extremis

So yesterday my FLGS was giving some stuff away. Apparently a person had stopped in who had picked up the old 2nd Edition Starter set for 40k and the 6th Ed Starter for Fantasy back when he was 11. Being the collectorish sort I snagged the 2nd ed books (which are the Core book, Codex Imperialis and the Wargear book) and at the end of the day, because no one wanted them, I went ahead and snagged the bag of Orks.
19 Boyz, a Deff Dread.
40 Grots.
Naturally I don't know what I'm going to do with these guys just yet (though they are begging to be painted and based and all that). So Dakka, any recommendations on Clans that'd look good on these guys?

The "slugga" boyz are actually old Goff clan boyz. They are typically red, black and silver, but I would suggest something that ties them into the rest of your army.

Yeah, 2nd ed orks had a certain amount of visual distinction between the clans aside from just being pained different colours. Goffs tended to go for big horns and spikes, and more armour.

The more you know, eh?
Well that narrows down how I should paint the Orks then. I still don't know what I'll do with them in the long run, but it's cool to have them.

There was a real model too, but that was the one that came with the starter set.

You need to mount that Deff dread on a 60 mm base and start using him, then all you need to do is march him sideways at the enemy and have them try to hit is <1mm Side armor.

The dreadnought was just an extra in the starter set to balance out the scenario package, as it was otherwise rather skewed in favour of the marines.
There was an actual model for regular games.

Kinda funny the orks needed that to balance things out really. It was 20 marines vs 20 orks and 40 gretchin. They were already outnumbered 3:1.
Man, those old starter boxes were such a good deal.

Yeah... except the grots had autoguns, and the orks had bolt pistols and axes... while the marines had power armour, bolters, frag grenades (so for a 10-man squad, 10 x 2" templates thrown up to 10 inches), flamers and missile launchers...

Well, yeah... although that's because it was the only way to buy the rules...

Yeah, Retro Goff style is what I'm thinking now. I just have to wait until late spring for a day warm enough to prime them.

kinda funny though. if that dredd was actually considered a normal model and not just for the scenario, you could legally field him after giving him a large base rofl. The look on peoples faces would be priceless.

As funny as that would be, most players nowadays would argue that it's not even something GW ever put out, it's not something seen in the short years they've been playing.
I've actually seen arguments (especially on the net) before where players who have been in the game "loads of time" (as in, the last five years) try to argue whether 2nd edition models are GW models or not. Usually models that may have been around since before they were walking.

I've got the rulebook the Deff Dread is mentioned in though. It's kind of hard to argue with the book that says "Warhammer 40,000" across the top and says it's a real thing.

Excellent! But you don't need to wait til spring to prime them. You can prime them in the dead of winter so long as you bring them back inside quickly. I've primed stuff on Christmas day in Connecticut where I was pretty much snowed in, then brought it back inside. So long as you're quick and you let it dry inside, you're golden.

Part of the problem is where I live. I'm up in the Rockies and live in a valley so it's a combination of cold, wind and moisture that makes the spray paint pretty useless outside. It has a bad habit of drying before it hits the models, or freezing before it does so. And if it doesn't do either of those the humidity wrecks it's own havoc.
