A small, commuter college in New York will give you more opportunities to see the country.

A small, traditional college in nowhere VA, will give you a better chance to get to know the cross-section of people who are trapped there with you. Which may not be indicative of the nation as a whole (but nowhere would be)

A quick peruse of UVA-Wise's website shows that they have fraternities. I can only assume that with their size, they will be central to what goes on. My college didn't have any, so I can't speak for what that means for visiting students. They are also proud of their CS department, name dropping it on the main info page. So presumably, you'd get some good classes.

I spoke with my professor and the two universities mentioned are the only ones that have a fee waiver agreement with my university.

So effectively i can go to either these two and only need to pay for travel and accomodation. Or go elsewhere and pay travel, accomodation and tuition fees.

Fees here are £3k per year for me. And i dread to think how ridiculous it is in the states. Which kinda limits me to these two

There's inherently nothing wrong with the VA school, it's just that you'd be in the middle of no where. Maybe you'd like that, I don't know. I hope you don't get discouraged from studying abroad.

Mercy College is less than a mile from Dobbs Ferry Train Station, which you can take into the city. If it were me, I'd go to Mercy College.

No joke.

I'd also give Alf's left nut to go to school for 5 grand.

As someone that joined a fraternity, it was the only good decision I made in college, but it led to a few bad decisions itself . Now I didn't go to college with the intent of joining a fraternity, but I met a group of guys that basically kept me at that school and made me a far more social guy than I was, and it has helped me get into a career that I like and is pretty stable. If you go to a school with a fraternity, I would at least go through formal recruitment as it can be an interesting experience and if nothing else, you get to meet a lot of people in a very short time period.

So that's something to think of, but also as someone that went to a school known for it's education program, I have to say I was extremely underwhelmed by the education classes I took at my University. UVA-Wise might not be the same, but it could.

I'm with Kronk on this one, if you want to be near a big city, I'd go with Mercy, if not, then give UVA a look.

It's a little swollen, we can split it.

And connect to any other city in the megaloplis. Though admittedly, some of those are in New Jersey.

But yeah, I would also go with Mercy College.

I've never been to New Jersey or met anyone from New Jersey, but I'm 100% certain this is accurate because I saw it on the internet.

I have been to New Jersey, met people from New Jersey, and have no idea who that girl is or where she resided prior to, ostensibly, moving to New Jersey.

Wise is not just kind of rural. It is BFE. There is almost no development in SW Virginia. Unless you are from a very remote part of the UK, I think you'd have a miserable time out there.

Can't you arrange to go to UVA proper, in Charlottesville? It's a bit less secluded and a far, far better school.

Unfortunately not. UVA-Wise is where it would be.
Now, i'm not kocking living in the middle of no where, but it definately isn't me. I'd prefer the NY alternative.
I spent 3 months working in the Colorado Rockies at a Summer Camp. We were maybe an hour drive from Denver, and it was always a PITA to get out of the mountains (Zero public transport and reliance on other people for a car probably didn't help). Also, i've never been to NY.

Mercy College's Cybersecurity course looks pretty good. Thats what i'll be talking to my professor about doing.

I dont understand your credit system, either. What are they, how do i get them and how many do i need?
Here, we do 6 modules per course, needing a 40% overall minimum to pass. It's definately different.

Well, sadly the answer to that is, "it depends."

I haven't looked through Mercy's site that much yet, but I'd wager they're on semesters and not quarters (most US Unis are moving away from quarters) so you're probably looking at 3-4 credits per course (4 credits typicall include labs as well), which means you're looking at either a 3 day a week class for 60 mins at a time, or a two day a week class for 90 mins at a time. Both of those usually qualify as 3 credits, and your addtional lab work would fulfill the 4th credit.

Each class is between 1 and 4 credit hours. That is the generally the amount of time you spend in the class per week, so if you have a 3 credit hour class, it is assumed that you will meet 3 times a week for 1 hour, or twice a week for like an hour and a half (Some schools do it as 50 minutes per instructional time which gives the twice a week classes 1 hour 25 per meeting.

Average course load is between 12 and 18 credit hours per semester (so 4 to 6 classes). With some students taking more credit hours and some taking less. I'm not entirely sure what you mean by the 40% overall minimum to pass. Is that for all of your classes? Or the amount of course work you need to pass in order to pass the class? In the states we work on a grade system that goes A, B, C, D, and F. The better grades (A and B) earn you more points to your GPA. Generally you can get down to a C- to pass a class in the States, but it varies college to college.

Our uni grade system is:
1st (70% and up)
2:1 (60-69%)
2:2 (50-59%)
Pass (40-49%)
Fail (below 40%)

Hope that clears up a few things.

70% and up? And you can pass with a 40%??

What the happy feth?

Jesus, I should have gone to school in England. I'd have been a Rank 1.

Assuming it is otherwise exactly the same.
That said anything under a 2:1 is basically ignored.

pretty much this.
While technically, you can pass at 40%, it's by no means 'good'
