500 Points of Chaos. Ideas?

Doesn't have to be massively competitive but enough to not make me look like a chump.

My general thoughts would be a cheap Lord a bunch of cultists for massed shots then a couple of small CSM sqauds.

Any ideas?

you probably want to include single model obliterators and mutilators to nurgle. they are nice at such a tiny point level. I found that 5 ksons can do a number to many of your opponents because most opponents wont field too many models with 2+ saves.

As for the HQ, a warpsmith to tear out terrain and have the 2+ save isn't too bad... but a cheap lord is also a good fit. I dont think you'll get too far with a sorceror as their first power has to be the less desirable chaos powers, and anyhting more is too expensive and delicate.

I'm curious to know what list you had been thinking of?

Chaos are very hard to get effective at 500 points, though it is nice to have a 50pt troop squad option.

I welcome it.

Im fairly limited on modals considering im fairly new to the hobby, so oblits and mutilators are out of the question at the moment, unless I use proxies. But anyway my plan was:

HQ Chaos Lord
Power Sword
Plasma Pistol (A bit pointless, but it comes with the modal)
Aura of Dark Glory
MoK

Troop 1 CSM
4 CCW
Flamer
Champ Power Sword
Mok

Troop 2 CSM
1 Plasma Gun

Troop 3 Cultists
16 Cultists
1 Flamer
Champ Shotgun
14 Autoguns

Fast Attack Bikes
1 Plasma Gun
Champ Lighting Claw

I know I wont be fighting armor, or at worst it will AV 11 from rhinos and the like. My concern is the bikes getting run off the board as losing 1 will cause a moral check. However this is only base until I give it a proper test out.

I think youll have fun wiht that list, and itll give you some flexibility within 500 pts. sounds like most of the work will be done by the bikes. If you can put the lord on a bike that would be a great addition. since your concerned about failing morale, maybe give the bikes vet of the long war? you might also give the champ a plasma gun/pistol/combiweapon and take it off the lord. This is because you are probably going to be hitting targets that are susceptible to plasma as you already have one in the squad. The lord is less likely to get enough action from his pistol.

You could probably split the cultists, or make the squad smaller for a few points. They are probably going to hide and score an objective. If they get shot, they will run (unless teamed with your lord).

You could count the reg marines as nurgle or kson marines, esp if you paint it that way, and your opponent knows you are very new to the hobby.

Otherwise it sounds like you have a good start and should play test what youve got.

I'm thinking I could get the cultist squad down to 10 men but keep the auto guns. That way they might be a little easier to hide behind and discourage any attention but still throw out some shots.

Looking through the codex the other option is to use a nurgle lord to unlock plague marines and use them as an all purpose unit with a few plasma guns for good measure. Then potentially a CSM squad to back up and hold an enemy objective.

Going nurgle CSM could be a better option.

Do you have a Heldrake? A single Heldrake with a Baleflamer can win games at that points level. It has ridiculously high damage output and is incredibly resilient.

You might be surprised how much armor you see at 500 points. a real common 500 point ig build is veterans in chimeras front 12 armor btw with melta guns and shot guns. depending on your hq choice you will typically see hq and 3 squads of veterans with melta guns in chimeras. another common ig build is basic hq and 2 basic veterans and 2 lemun ruses . if the lemun ruses are basic you will see the extra points in the veterans if not you will see the russes with sponsons typically.

(on a big off topic side note) its actually wierd with the ig, due to force organization rules and the nature of the ig, games 750 points or lower tend to focus on mechanization or a fielding a couple of game enders. Its once you get to the higher point levels that fielding an effective infantry army actually becomes viable

Unfortunately I do not have any helldrakes at the moment. In also thinking that bringing helldrakes to a 500 point friendly game may be a little too cheesy, but yes they are an awesome idea otherwise.

I think trying a nurgle list may be best, so ill write one up soonish and post it here.

Are we assuming that normal CSM without marks are just too non competitive? Unless I use them in groups of 10 or more I guess.
