So, I'm not entirely done but I feel proud enough to show off the city board I've made for me and my friends.

And one where we're playing a game. This is his "last stand" as I blitzkrieged forward, trying to annihilate his forces before they could deep strike in... I failed and he came in behind me lol.

I love what you did with the pop cans, very creative. It's lookin' pretty good. If you really want that nice ruined city feel I'd recommend some actual rubble, it'll add a lot of character to your board. I'd also think about doing a road of some sort, but that's just me.

Looks like a lot of fun to play on, nice work.

Not to jump in with contradictory advice, but I was just about to say that the thing I liked best was the LACK of rubble. Most city boards I see have so much rubble strewn everywhere that you can't get your models to balance on it, which takes what could have been a nice game board and turns it into a mediocre display board. We have some terrain pieces at our local game store that are pieces of thin board flocked green, with circular pieces that you can remove. We have, mounted on circles of identical board, lots of trees, bushes, and other features, so we can get modular area terrain. That would work perfectly for a city terrain, since you could make your replaceable pieces covered in rubble if you want that bombed-out look, or you could have some with roadblocks, street signs, or municipal statuary if you want a cleaner appearance. Seems like it would be a decent compromise.

Still, loving what you have here! It's something I would love to play on some day!

Thanks for the compliments guys, as with Jimsolos observation my objective was to have a city fight board but avoid not being able to move our models where we wanted to move them.

We're more gamers than cinematic/painter types, so I prioritized utility over looks quite a bit.

I need to highlight the board, maybe make some more craters but I'm not sure how to add any more to it without either forcing the buildings onto an area terrain platform or making a cluttered mess.

I think you should base your ruins.

You can strew some rubble about without drowning the board in it. This terrain is functional and simple, and reminds me a lot of the terrain I played on in highschool and college at my friends' places. I do think that basing the ruins and giving them some rubble (not a ton, just a bit to show it's difficult terrain) would be really neat though. They need some "oomph" to them that will make them more realistic and exciting to look at.

I like it man, that's actually exactly what im looking to do. Something still playable but with a run down war torn city. If i may ask what did you use to construct your ruins/buildings with? Just lookin at the board has giving me some great ideas!

Not bad, for a start! It definitely could use some more texture and color. Right now it's all super-smooth and one color. You can glue sand down to add unobtrusive rubble, or take some uneeded models and turn 'em into casualties. Add some rust and soot and craters filled with filthy stagnant rainwater and you'll have a brilliant board with very little work.

I used foamcore to make the buildings, stuff is amazingly easy to work with. Bunch of good tutorials on youtube to make ruins with them.

Yeah you can't see it because of the color and that I haven't put a contrasting color on it yet but there is sand in the paint I have there so it has a nice grit to the board haha. I like the idea about the casualties, I'll have to remember that.
