This is one of those things where I always assumed something and then suddenly found it wasn't always thought that way by others and am now uncertain.

When you can buy one something per X models, (specifically in this case, I'm thinking of the one weapons platform per ten guardians in a Guardian Defenders squad), do you actually have to have the full ten?

My assumption - I buy eight guardians in a unit, I can therefore buy one weapons platform for that unit. I then bump the number of guardians in the unit up to 15, I can now have two weapons platforms for that unit.

But reading it absolutely RAW, I'm now wondering if it has to be: "buy ten guardians, now I can get that first weapons platform; buy all the way up to twenty guardians and I can get two".

Which is correct? I'm a returning player and I just assumed the former, but I can't find anything to contradict the latter interpretation.

Thanks!

It's got to be the full amount..

If I only have 8 of something, do I have ten? Nope, therefore I get zero of whatever the shiny thing may be.

I have 15 of something, do I have ten? Indeed, and then some, but not another ten, so I get 1 shiny thing.

Or think of it as 10%, strictly rounding down (in contravention to standard mathematical procedure).

Woah. That's going to change some of my army lists! I think my assumption was a hold-over from other systems. I was thinking of the "ten" as a kind of block, that could be partial, when you exceeded it, you'd get tipped into the next block which then counted again. It was only reading through it the other day that I started thinking 'you could actually read it this other way'.

Thanks. Wish it were the other way around.

I only play 40k (and a bit of Malifaux) so I don't know how it works in other game systems, but I can tell you that it has always been this way in 40k...

Weird. I used to play 1st edition (played up to 3rd and then got out). I wonder where I picked it up from. Oh well... Easy come, easy go...

Uhmmm no it hasn't. Check the FAQ for Grots and runtherders. The ruls says one per ten but the FAQ states that to mean one per every whole ten and even tells you that at 19 you only need one.

That is how it works for everything in 40k? How is that any different than the Guardian example?

Funnily enough Noise Marines work differently. 1 blastmaster only until you hit ten or more.

It's not the size of the blade, it's how you use it.

So.... with 19 grots, you only need 1 herder, because you have a ten, and then some (but not a second full ten), and if you take 20 grots, you to need 2 runtherds, because you have two full sets of ten. EXACTLY the same.

What BunnyComm said is in perfect accordance with the Ork FAQ, as well as the rules. Why are you disagreeing with him?

In the case of Guardians:
1-9 models = no platform; 10-19 = 1 platform; 20 = 2 platforms
(Although I don't know what their min size is; they could start at 10 and thus always be eligible for at least one)

When the CSM dex was first published the wording wasn't quite the same as all of the others so there was some confusion. Rather than FAQ it, they actually used Errata to change the rule so that you could have a blastmaster for min size to 9, and 2 at 10+

Actually in defence of Elric (and unfortunately in promotion of my own inelegant writing), I did sort of imply I might buy only 8 guardians. I know that you can't, I was just trying to illustrate the principle. But it did kind of sound that way.

Mea culpa.

EDIT: I cannot read. I thought he was replying to me, but he was not. Do any of my posts in this thread make me look like anything other than an idiot? : /

EDIT EDIT: On the subject of guardian numbers, if GW gave me one codex change for Christmas, it would be that I could get an extra Wave Serpent dedicated transport for larger guardian squads. Just make it so that the vehicles had to maintain vehicle squadron coherency, I wouldn't mind. I just want to be able to get a full twenty-elder unit packed up in decent transport and rushed to the front lines!
