Hey all,

I'm looking at coming out of the closet and playing at some W40k gaming clubs that are rather popular in my district, although i've heard from my friends who go there, that the players are rather competitive and there are eldar and tau players aplenty, So, as the title says, what are some of the most powerful units and lists i should look out for?

Generally speaking:

-Buff commander joining various units which can twin link, ignore cover, provide monster or tank hunter and Night Vision

-Riptide with buff commander

-Dark Reapers with buff commander

-Wave Serpents with Holofields, twin link Scatterlasers and Shuriken Cannon.

-Wraithknights

-Battle Focus ability is very clutch for the Eldar

-Jetseer, but very dependent on lucky rolls for psychic powers. However, this unit will either have Baron Sathonyx, or in a pinch, a Tau Commander who will provide Hit and Run. If they get Fortune, you now are dealing with Baron with a rerollable 2++ to contend with.

-Beastpacks with Eldar Farseer psychic buffs

-Farsight Bomb; this can be a complicated unit to play against and I'd recommend they carefully explain how this unit will work once it hits the table. It relies on great shooting, various signature systems and the ability to split fire.

-Swooping Hawks are a good disruption unit

-Warp Spiders are very fast and can hit surprisingly hard.

-Massed Shuriken Fire is underrated, but they basically have rending and are BS4.

-Skyrays

-Pathfinders are one of the key units in Tau army as they really buff the other units (ignore cover being a very significant boost).

-Eldar jetbikes for objective scoring potential

Hope this helps.

No earth shattering, thought provoking quote. I'm just someone who was introduced to 40K in the late 80's and it's become a lifelong hobby.

Basically you will want to roll over and cry.

If you get the opportunity to, stick your objectives close to cover, or cover close to your objectives. Bring a lot of units with template and ignore cover weapons, a high amount of mobility or pinning weapons (Honestly 3 Thunderfire Cannons makes mobility dependant armies weep, especially with barrage)

If you are playing a drop pod list (assuming you're playing marines and looking to counter tau and dar) maximise your number of drop pods, stick locator beacons on a couple and use them to physically barricade an opponent into an area. This is one of the most grossly underused abilities of the drop pod, and should be abused for maximum tear collection. Simply pen a big unit in or plonk empty pods in front of gun lines blocking Line of Sight. IT IS GLORIOUS.
