Hello,

I have painted my tiny group of space marines (20) in a white/gold/chainmail mix, and was wondering if this chapter already exists. Also, on a slightly different note, is it better to start with tyranids, necrons or chaos space marines?

Thanks

Probably, post a picture of them and it will be easier to tell.

Start with whatever army you enjoy most; they're your "toys," choose what you like.

It's difficult to say if your color scheme belongs to a chapter already, but here's a good reference JUST TO START OFF WITH:

As far as your army question goes, well at the minute I'd say Tyranids need skill to do well with (until their new codex drops and they become fotm lol), CSM are pretty mid-range (depending on which camp you belong in), and Necrons are quite good for new players because they are powerful and fun to use. Go with whatever army you like the look of and whose story turns you on the most - rules always change, the lore and appearance is fairly static once the army is mature enough.

Thank you for the responses. I don't have a camera, and my phone's one is god awful, but I have an image from bolterandchainsword. It is an attachment.

In short - yes your chapter exists.
GW invites you (or at least used to) to create your own chapter.
It is written that there are around 1000 chapters in existing at the time of the 40K setting but due to the vagaries on inter-warp travel, record keeping is practically impossible. Some chapters are lost is storms for decades even centuries only to pop back into real space without warning.
Whether or not your colours represent a chapter that GW has already depicted I don't know.

depends on your list formation.
Personally I've never used possessed (battle force), chosen (DV) or cultists (also DV).
In DV you do get the rulebook, templates & some Dark Angels (which you could sell).
Later on you could use the chosen for unit leaders or chaos lords.
This is difficult to work out due to my bias but I would go for the DV box even if you already have the rules (as you can sell these too, usually easier than the Dark Angels).
