I run a Raven's Guard army and I love the idea behind the Honor Guard. I've only used them once and it was small 3 man unit with a chapter champion, all power swords. I had them using a Storm raven as a transport. I was facing off against Taudar with 2 riptides and a wraithknight, so I had already accepted defeat before we even started, haha. I was able to use the Storm Raven to get them into combat with a Farseer squadded up with a Riptide. Lost the Storm Raven right afterwards and wound up tying up the riptide for 2 turns and smashing the farseer's face in with the chapter camp in a challenge. It was good fun, and since I am not running Calgus' honor guard with my chapter mine are all kit-bashed so i already love the models. I'd love to get some ideas on how to safely get them into combat where they belong.

How do you all run your honor guard units, or do you gloss over them entirely?

3 swords, 3 mauls, 3 axes.

Shove a chapter master with a Shield eternal to tank wounds.

Great inside a Landraider.

I was debating using them in a Drop pod as i dont play against tau too often. (the Lack of an Invul hurts it the most so im thinking trying tiggy with the 4++ power.

I like that idea, it'll be a bit pricy to actually put together but I am in the game for the long haul.

Any recommendations on kit-bashing? Mine mainly come from the Sternguard and Vanguard kits.

definitely the Sternguard and vanguard kits.

Other kits include BT upgrades and DA upgrades as they have a lot of cloaks, unique helmets and bits.

Honor Guard all the way!!

That would be my next project with the new codex.

I've never used the power axes before, I understand that they give a slight strength increase and I think they are AP3 but they are unwieldy so you swing at initiative 1. What's the benefit of taking them over the power sword aside form the +1 to strength?

I don't know if it is the same as the BA thing which I take (can't remember the name) but I load up on Storm Shield+Thunder Hammer and a Storm Shield+Thunder hammer captain stuck in a drop pod with missile launcher. Lot's of points but a great punch in your enemies face.

They're AP2

Cool, thanks guys. I'll be picking up a few more kits and a Land raider down the road. Honestly, honor guard are just fun to play with the amount of attacks they dish out and a 2+ save.

How do you get them is my problem. the only kit I can find is the one that comes with culgar but there so covered in Ultra symbols its seems pointless.

Try kitbashing, you can get some suitable-looking results by combining the plastic Sternguard with other kits.

Desubot recommended grabbing the BT and DA uprgrade sprues on top of Sternguard and Veteran Vanguard kits. You can also try using the command squad kits in conjunction as well, there are some nice pieces in there.
