So which is the best episode eh? I was only going to allow one option (V) but I figured we had better have an actual discussion

I agree that V is the best... however, This poll is entirely wrong.

There are only 3 Star Wars episodes ever made.

Yeah, where did those first 3 come from? All I remember where long toy advertisements with no character development and clustered frames. I never remembered them as being full movies.

The best ones weren't referred to by Episode, just their title. It wasn't Star Wars: Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back, it was just The Empire Strikes back.

As a kid, I would say ANH. As an adult, Empire all the way. Episode III was mostly decent (other than Anakin's scream at the end and Padme being whiney, and the idiot Jedi who tore down Anakin instead of treating him like an adult). Hmm, actually, that's a bunch of pretty poor decisions right there. Yay, Lucas!!

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

Empire. RotJ gets a special mention for best space battle of them all, but the ewoks knock it down a peg. They should have been wookiees.

In order: Empire, Return, Hope, Revenge, Menace/Clones tie for last place.

However, I'm convinced that there are several serials in the Clone Wars animated series that outclass anything in the prequel trilogy. Anakin is actually written far better in Clone Wars (Ie not just a whiny brat) and the episodes that centre on the Clones themselves do them far more justice than any of the movies. The space battles are easily on par with anything in the films, and the ground battles are not far behind. If you haven't seen any, check them out, they're great.

Indeed. Lucas could take a hint that you don't need super fancy CG to have a good movie or series.

Episode II, in that I judge movies based upon how much screen time Natalie Portman gets doing things.

In reality, Episode V, like many have said. IV was very good, VI was good, but there were parts I wasn't thrilled with (and I still hate Ewoks), but V hit all the right notes I felt.

Episode one doesn't feth up as much stuff as the others. It's still awful, but the prequels only get worse as they go on. Episode one is just the prelude to a pair of turds.

What I will give Ep 3 is that visually, it was very impressive. The opening battle over Coruscant was great, and the lightsaber duels were pretty good. But the plot was serioudly lacking and the acting was poor with a few exceptions. Ewan Macgregor was ok, as was Christopher Lee, but the rest were terrible. I'm not sure whether it was the writing or the quality of the acting, but Anakin and Padme just annoyed me.

Midichlorians. melon-fething MIDICHLORIANS.

They also killed off the only two semi-decent new characters in Episode 1 as well.

It was tough for me to decide. As an adult, I liked Empire the best, but Hope was as much a part of my childhood as sugary cereal and homework. I watched A New Hope almost every day between the ages of 4 and 6.

I didn't get to see Empire and Jedi until I was 8 I think, so many of my days careening around the house had me at the control of an X-wing on the trench run.

The one thing I will say for the prequel trilogy was some of the imagery was straight out of my childhood imagination. I always wanted to see a ton of jedi fighting on screen at once. Of course, I wanted it to be a big Sith vs Jedi battle. Unfortunately, I was too old to ignore all the glaring flaws in the prequels. I guess you can't recapture your youth. I wish I had seen the entire series at the age of 5.

The fight with Darth Maul was the gak though. Such a wasted opportunity.

It's a clustered fight between two forces I don't know or care about. It's also something some guy just rendered on his computer, and lacked any emotional connection to the audience. It's also semi-impossible to know who is who and what is what.

I've been awkward and gone for Return of The Jedi.

With the exception of annoying Teddy bears, I just love the Battle over Endor, Palpatine... It's a Trap. Luke kicking ass with his lightsaber, speeder bike chase. It's just great

Yeah throwing as much gak on the screen as possible doesn't always make for good action scenes.

Empire was for sure the best episode, battle of Hoth and epic fight between Luke and Vader.

Empire
New Hope
Return/Phantom Menace (tied third place)
Attack of the Clones
Revenge of the Sith

Empire Strikes Back is not only the best Star Wars film. It's also one of my favourite films in general. And A New Hope is all good.

Return of the Jedi is good too, and so is Phantom Menace (I love Phantom Menace - somehow I think it's the film in the series that's the most fun to watch. Probably for nostalgic reasons, because I was 8 years old when it premiered. Loved it then, love it now)

Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith are both steaming piles. I fething HATE those films, because they killed Boba Fett, Darth Vader and the Emperor for me.

My order is 5-6-3-4-2-1. It appears I agree with most of you empire is the best. Like commissar said you have the battle of Hoth and just quality action throughout with an actual plot that just seems to flow right.

Many feel that the Neimoidians are a racial caricature.
Jar Jar Binks
Many feel that Watto is a racial caricature.
Battle Droids are comic relief, not a villain. Bad comic relief.
Jar Jar Binks
Some feel the lightsaber fight was too dancy, not enough killy.
Midichlorians
Jar Jar Binks
Darth Maul is often seen as badly underused.

My own opinion, the only particularly enjoyable things about the film was:

1) I did like Ewan Macgregor with Qui Gon Jinn
2) Darth Maul's music
3) It has the source of my favourite Star Wars factoid. The big, dancy, happy, celebration tune at the end of Episode I?
It's an up tempo version of The Emperor's Theme. - The whole film went exactly to Palpatines plan.

Compare to 1:08 in this.

This Is Where the Fish Lives

The Empire Strikes Back is by far the best of the series and is my all time favorite movie.

Now, I understand that it is cool to be cynical about the prequels and it is fair to say that there is plenty to complain about (midi-chlorians, Jar-Jar Binks, battle droids, Hayden Christensen's acting, "Noooooooo!," "Hold me, Ani. Hold me like you did on the shore of the lake on Naboo.") but I appreciate all of the films because of my love of the overall mythology of the Star Wars Universe. However, it is also fair to say the prequels do a lot right as well: Obi-Wan/Qui-Gon vs. Darth Maul, the Battle of Geonosis, Anakin/Obi-Wan/Yoda vs. Dooku, the Battle of Coruscant, Anakin vs Dooku: Round 2, Order 66, and Obi-Wan vs. Anakin.

Of course Patton Oswalt does make a strong case (NSFW language): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LDCjIjsZp_Y

Obi-Wan/Qui-Gon vs. Darth Maul = Three characters with no to little backstory who have ether sat on a ship for most of the film or complained, made incredibly poor decisions, or have no character or personality what so ever except for the most basic of traits fighting in a perfect battle with no flaws or emotion, which leads to no further character development and limited impact on the story of all 3 films as a whole.

Battle of Geonosis = 12 minutes of clustered frames which leads to no real plot development, has little impact on the story, and was made simply to distract people from the fact that the film was a sloppy, rushed job with a lacking plot. Has no real effect on the characters or the rest of the series.

Dooku vs Yoda =. Big name actor who plays someone with no personality who is introduced late into the 2nd film as the big bad and is killed early in the second film which acts as the only development of a character in the entire film. Pointless attempt to rip off episode five is made, before Yoda comes in and jumps around like a monkey on heroine swinging around a glow stick, ruining yoda's image as a wise teacher in a shallow attempt to make toys.

Corusunt = 15 mins of clustered frames with no impact on the story or characters. Introduces another pointless character to sell toys and comes off like a scene from Transformers.

Dooku vs Anikan = removal of previous big bad to sell toys of the new big bad. Minimal character development with Anikan continuing to act like a pot head as Palpatine continues to act suspicious. Anikan has to be flat out told by Palpatine that he's a sith lord despite the sheer obviousness of this.

Order 66 = 7 mins of multi-coloured aliens being shot by clone troopers. Has minimal plot development and relays on a non-existant emotional connection to the audience with random actors we've seen in the background, who are obviously awaiting pay checks and wishing they'd taken up careers working in a toll booth.

Obi-spank vs Ambient illusion = 20 mins of a pointless fight which attempts to be dark and gritty, but falls flat as Hayden Christianson ruins the shot as he screams as George Lucas for ruining any chance of a future career, which is somehow kept in the actual cut for some reason. Also features the death of random wom- I mean important plot character who did nothing and was there because big name.
