Sony have revealed their big plans to expand the Spider-Man franchise into a larger movie universe, officially announcing spinoff movies for Venom and The Sinister Six.

Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci, Jeff Pinkner, Ed Solomon, and Drew Goddard will collaborate on overseeing the “developing story over several films” says Sony, saying they “have formed a franchise brain trust to expand the universe for the brand and to develop a continuous tone and thread throughout the films,” in conjunction with producers Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach and director Marc Webb (The Amazing Spider-Man, The Amazing Spider-Man 2).

Well this could either go well, or horribly.

Amidst the mists and coldest frosts he thrusts his fists against the posts and still insists he sees the ghosts.

Don't we get hints at some of the six in the trailer for the next spiderman film. Doc Ock's tentacles and Vulture's wings?

Hopefully Venom is massively different from the SM3. I wonder if they'll still make it alien or a biological virus/experiment kind of thing.

Interesting to think about a film centered on a villainous team.

A Venom movie could be really great.

It won't be, though.

Spiderman?

He's the only hero that Sony have rights to isn't he?

Spoiler:
Apparently the next film will kill off Gwen, so if the Sinister Six film is set in between the 2nd and 3rd Spiderman films we could potentialy have one very angry Spiderman for our villains to deal with...

Hmm, this should be good. With Marvel, the villans are often just as good as the heroes. I hope Fox and Disney take heed here, as some spin-offs on X-men and Avengers baddies would be great. Loki would be great, as would a more Magneto-centric X-film.

Well looks like Sony is going to keep Spider-Man for awhile longer.

In the trailer in the section where Harry is showing Peter that he has been under surveillance it starts with him opening a screen with a huge lit of folders in it, to which some intrepid fellow paused and tried to read. Most were eligible, but one of the ones that could be read says "venom storage", so my guess is the latter.

venom/eddie brock wasnt really a "villain" villain,

he just wanted to kill spider man,

lots of the comics about him after he lets go of killing spidy, or just isnt as focused on it at the time, deal with venom protecting the homeless and generally being a decent kind of guy.

could be a good flick, lets hope anyways ;P

Venom's always had a "protector of the innocent" schtick going, he just considers Spider-Man a threat against the innocent. He's definitely not a villain, he's an anti-hero. Now, Mac Gargan Venom, that's a different story. Full blown baddy.

Getting back to "original" Venom...depending on the universe (I know, I know...I said original), Venom was often an experiment. In fact, I think only the 90s cartoon and the classic comics had him as an alien originally.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

Well, it's like they're going to try and shoehorn in Secret Wars to explain it

Good God, can you imagine if they tried?! Sony and Disney would have to work together, as would FOX...it would be a clusterfeth. (Sony for Spidey, Fox for X-men and Fantastic Four, for those not keeping with the crap contracts). Let alone the time...just to build up Venom being an alien...

well, maybe they'll keep it kinda simple and go with how they portrayed it in the ultimate spiderman cartoon
venom as a weapon created by doc oc from a sample of spidermans blood

I don't really get the spider man reboot the Sam Raimi one's were already well (at least 1 and 2 were) and were better and it's still a series that's fresh in our minds so there's no nostalgia value to it either.

They can't hold on the the license if they don't use it.

If they don't hold on the the license, it reverts to Marvel\Disney.

If that happens, Spider Man could be in the Avengers.

So it's a classic dog in the manger ploy.

Could they do a deal with Disney where they give the license to Disney but get a certain percentage of the profit from the product?

In theory, yes. There have been crossovers between companies like that before, especially in video games.

In reality, it would be as likely as a wife swap between President Obama and the President of Iran.
