Hey there dakka. The holidays are rolling around, and in classic fashion, I've decided to make a last minute purchase to get the creative juices flowing a bit.

I want to paint up some Chaos Marines, and unfortunately, I'm a bit baffled by the new line of paints. I can remember exactly what my old combination used to be...

Mechrite Red --> Red Gore --> Baal Red over everything --> Devlan mud over everything

Boltgun metal -->rough highlight of Chainmail --> wash with badab black --> extreme highlight of Mithril silver

Line the recesses with thinned down chaos black for maximum contrast and scorpion green eyes

I can remember it like it was yesterday! Anyway, I've read the equivalent chart, but I don't really know what to make of it, and I would just prefer personal advice. I don't think it was obvious, but I'm going for deep, deep, saturated crimson, with shockingly bright silver trim and excessive recess lining to emphasize the contrast. Knowing this, do you have any ideas what colors I should buy?

I could be convinced to buy some other line of paints, but I haven't heard too many complains with the new line, so hopefully I can keep it simple and just order everything as a big lot from GW.

I'd try and use a base of mephiston red and layer it up with a bit of orange added into each layer. As well as washing it red between each layer.

Malifaux masters owned: Guild(Sans McCabe), Outcasts(Sans Misaki), Arcanists(Sans Marcus)

I think I'd use Leadbelcher washed with typhus corrosion and drybrushed from the top with necron compound.

The Vallejo Game Colour line is basically an identical match to the previous GW line so that would solve your problem imo, this is the paint range compatibility chart. They're also arguably better in a number of ways.

Hey, thanks for the help.

I just bought about 16 paints from Wayland games, including basically every red tone in the model color line, as well as the Army Painter mega brush set, which I hope is as good as it sounds. I also bought Khorne Red, because I've been eager to try out some GW paints.

I'm not going to be a brand elitist, because there's no reason to be, so I'll probably just mix lines together and figure out what I like. GW seems to make a lot of really cool stuff, especially glazes and whatever washes have become, and Vallejo makes a very solid, consistent product.

I don't really expect you to reply to this after a month, but what is the benefit of the technical paints, especially typhus and Nurgle's Rot? Do they work as good as they sound like they would?
