Subject: Why do you still play Warhammer?

So I'm genuinely wondering what the hell I have all these toys on my shelf for. I was thinking about quitting after I realized the vast cost of GW minis but I generally don't have a lot of hobbies or interests and at first I was really liking the whole wargaming thing but now I'm just not so sure. I'm not so into it now because as it turns out my local group isn't much fun to play with, and it's hard to justify owning the models when there is no one to play. But I figured I'd stick it out because eventually I'll move to a bigger city and thus find more players, but I'm pretty convinced that I wouldn't like that one bit either, but not so much because of the people. It's the rules that get me angry. They are so convoluted and they weigh down gameplay considerably, and more often than not it seems like Warhammer players spend more time arguing about the rules than actually playing.
But still, I like painting the minis, I like building them, and whether they work in game or not I like trying out new tactics and gear. I love list building and I even get a little kick out of doing all the math, which is weird because in school I hated math! I do like the product GW puts out, even if it is a mismanaged company and they charge way too much, but I hate their core rules.
So why do you long timers still play Warhammer and 40K? What is the appeal for you specifically? I ask because I'm hoping to find some inspiration to keep spending my time on this. I haven't enjoyed a hobby in ages, and it seems such a shame to let other people ruin it for me.

My advice? Try picking up Necromunda. It's an ace game, the rules aren't too convoluted and more importantly the rules are written with FUN in mind. It's still the 40k world and system, but it's so much more fun.

Do you play any other games? I'm moving away from 40k myself, once I sell my current Mordian IG army and tone it down using Vic Minis, and have recently re-invested in Firestorm Armada.
The appeal remaining for me is the HH series FW is doing, and the general fluff/aesthetics of the game. Well, that and its easy to find a game.

There are 4 games played around here . w40k , WFB , WM and infinity. WFB costs too much for me to start it , I play WM but my faction [cygnar] doesn't have good models I could use[6months of losing] and the people playining infinity are a very closed circle . they don't play much at the shop , outside of tournaments ,but in some sort of a club they made .Most of them live in the same closed community , so it would be hard to even get inside . And the most important thing I have an army for w40k , but won't have the cash to start an army for something else till next summer ends.

Welcome to the club OP. There are a huge number of players who feel the way you do, so don't feel like your somehow wrong or the odd man out for disliking the core rules.
As someone on here whom I've forgotten once put it - they enjoy the game "despite" the rules not "because" of them.
Theres two main solutions to this problem. The first is to find a group of friends who are ok with homeruling, and then change the game and turn Warhammer into Myhammer. With a few tweaks the game goes from terrible to pretty damn fun, even if it remains kinda brainless and luck based.
The other is to simply switch to another game. I cannot recommend Infinity enough - however I have heard more than one account like the one above, where Infinity players isolate themselves from other games and gamers for some damn reason. Hasn't happened at all here, so god knows what thats all about.
Another excellent possibility is Mantic's Warpath. It's literally 40k without the convoluted mess of rules that sucks the fun out of the game, and its absolutely fantastic. It can also work just fine with 40k minis, however not every faction is represented (but seriously, just make your own faction). Again, downsides here like with anything else - the game is in beta (though the rules are free - make sure you get Warpath 2.0 not 1.0), there aren't many players because it's not one of the big few, and there seems to be a sort of hatred towards Mantic by some diehard 40kers for some crazy reason.
Otherwise, as previously suggested, Necromunda along with some other older GW offerings are legit good games.

Because Chaos Marines can't be found elsewhere.
I love the setting as a whole too much to abandon it, even if my budget disagrees with me...

I'm pretty much newer, I work sucky hours and am able currently get maybe 4 games a month between the 2 people I know that play (my stepson and the 1 person in my area I've met), but damn if I don't love it. Dunno what it is, I'm not a huge competitive guy as of now, but I just enjoy the battle win lose or draw. I'm hoping I meet some more people in my area, but who knows with my whacky hours. But painting and building is to much fun! I've dropped 2k in the last 2 months and have had 2 games lol, oh well.

I'm still in the 40k/fantasy/flames because I love the modeling and painting aspect of it. I started it off as a vivid gamer(2 games/week), now its about 3-4 games/year, part of it due to other life happenings, but I always try to get my models on the table painted. I sold off and in process of selling models I find displeasing.

I 'play' to build and paint. The modeling side of things is the draw for me. If I get games in, it's a bonus!

Find a group of likeminded gamers and houserule the game. The rules are a starting point, so unless you're big into tournaments, use them as that. I don't think my friends and I have ever played a 'by the book' game of 40k. Any rule we don't particularly like, we houserule. This has made 6th edition very fun, mostly because is seems what the GW designers tried to put on paper works for us - it just needs a little tweaking to get it over the line. Things like changing how Warlord traits are rolled for, not using 'mysterious' terrain or objectives, not using the rulebooks terrain placement rules, small things.
