Subject: Dark Mechanicus army? Why not?

It seems strange to me that GW hasn't jumped on this idea years ago. It wouldn't be hard at all to write the fluff for such a seemingly popular choice of army. The Dark Mechanicus has been referred to in multiple 40K novels. GuitaRasmus has done some beautiful conversions that would surely get the creative juices at GW flowing. Here's a link: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/1500/395043.page#5845165
I've been into 40K for about 5 years, but does anyone remember when the last "new" army was released? Seems to me that the bean counters at GW are missing a golden opportunity to fatten the company coffers.

It is the 3rd Millennium. For more than a hundred months Games Workshop has sat immobile on the Golden Throne of Nottingham. It is the foremost of wargames by the will of the neckbeards, and master of a million tabletops by the might of their inexhaustible wallets. It is a rotting carcass writhing invisibly with business strategies from the early Industrial Revolution Age. It is the Carrion Lord of the wargaming scene for whom a thousand veteran players are sacrificed every day, so that it may never truly die. Yet even in its deathless state, GW continues its eternal vigilance. Mighty battleforce starter-sets cross the online-store-infested miasma of the internet, the only route between distant countries, their way lit by a draconian retail trade-agreement, the legal manifestation of the GW's will. Vast armies of lawyers give battle in GW's name on uncounted websites. Greatest amongst its soldiers are the Guardians of the IP, the Legal Team, bio-engineered super-donkey-caves. Their comrades in arms are legion: the writing team and countless untested rulebooks, the ever vigilant redshirts, and the writers of White Dwarf, to name only a few. But for all their multitudes, they are barely enough to hold off the ever-present threat from other games, their own incompetence, Based Chinaman - and worse. To support Games Workshop in such times is to spend untold billions. It is to support the cruelest and most dickish company imaginable. These are the tales of those times. Forget the power of sales discounts and Warhammer Fantasy Battle, for so much has been dropped, never to be re-published again. Forget the promise of cheaper digital content and caring about the fanbase, for in the GW HQ there is only profit-seeking, Space Marines and Sigmarines. There is no fun amongst the hobby shops, only an eternity of raging and spending, and the laughter of former employees who left GW to join better companies. |

"Seemingly popular" popular being the key point here. There are tons of factions that are "seemingly popular" like regular mechanicus, and you don't seem to be giving any thought at all into what it actually takes to make an entirely new faction.

The Mechanicus is popular enough that it IS getting it's own 30k army however.

They don't even produce a regular AdMech army, which is an actual army within the background material.
Dark AdMech isn't. So what's so surprising to you?
|
"'players must agree how they are going to select their armies, and if any restrictions apply to the number and type of models they can use."
This is an actual rule in the actual rulebook. Quit whining about how you can imagine someone's army touching you in a bad place and play by the actual rules.

You can run a perfectly workable Admech/Darkmech list out of the DE codex.
Haemies as Tech-adepts/Magos
Cronos/Talos as big nasty beasties (Skitarii? )
wracks as servitors
Hover transports are within the realm of possibility.
Grotesques as uber-buff servitor types.
Servo skulls as Razorwing swarms ...
Leastways, that's MY next modelling project
I wouldn't hold out much hope for an official one, but it's be nice...

Well with all the current Dinobots it doesn't seem to hard to make a Dark Mechanicus themed Chaos force.
Mechanicus might be on the horizon though, there was a rumour about sprues being seen for them- although Forge World might cover them already, some absolutely fantastic models have been coming out.

Honestly, we don't need more Imperium (No matter how much I want it), other races are more deserving.

I wouldn't be surprised if we saw a new army in the next 2 years:
- They will have most codices up to date soon
- 6th edition just dropped
- most armies are plastic
- fantasy can't fill the release schedule
They will be needing stuff to fill the voids

I'm working on a fandex myself (next part due after finals, so next week cover the army rules and troops when my brain is no longer fried) which is a valid option.
Outside of that Forgeworld is adding the Mechanicum (and I'm betting the traitor Mechanicum too) into 30k so it's only a matter of time before those get options for 40k as well just to increase the use of the product lines.

I think more like 'anything but ANOTHER fething IOM release'
You have to admit for one faction, they do get an AWFUL lot of the attention
I would like to see Mechanicus/Dark Mech as a single codex with seperate allies charts depending on which side you choose.

A large part of the focus on humanity being the focus is because they're "us". We're similar enough to them that we can relate and play a game about them. It's one of the reasons why the focus is so heavy on them, because they're the closest thing to us and the easiest to understand.
It's also why we haven't had a Star Trek series set on a Vulcan Science Vessel without humans.

Yeah, i know.
Some more xenos terrain or races wouldn't go amiss though
It might cut down on the 'oh look, something else Imperial...yawn' reaction a bit.
Personally i'd love to see Mechanicus as a dex, but i'd also love to see chaos expand out from just the one book for CSM and one for Daemons.
CSM are different enough from each other fluffwise to justify a codex per god, at least, and ditto daemons, if BA and SW are considered different enough from SM to merit one.
They won't GET it, but one can dream..

While you can differentiate enough to do that, there is the issue of then needing model lines and slots in the already full release schedule...
